Eagle cagers start seasons in two weeks

The Pecos Eagle basketball teams will be opening their 2001-2002 seasons in just under two weeks from today, with road games against the Crane Golden Cranes and Monahans Loboes.

Pecos' girls will travel to Crane to start off their season, while the boys go to Monahans for their opening game of the year, both on Tuesday, Nov. 13. The boys also have a trip to Fort Stockton three days later, before both teams play their home openers on Nov. 19, against the Presidio Blue Devils.

The games are the first of six doubleheaders at home this season for both Pecos teams. The girls will host Fort Stockton and the boys will face Andrews at home the day after the Presidio doubleheader, and have three more doubleheaders scheduled for January and one for Feburary, with the final three involving District 2-4A games for both squads.

The girls open the district portion of their schedule on Jan. 4 at Clint, and host Fabens on Jan. 8 in their home district opener. The boys host Crane that night, and then begin 2-4A play on Jan. 11 at Canutillo. Their district home opener isn't scheduled until Jan. 22 when Clint comes to town.

The girls just missed ending a 10-year playoff drought last season, losing their final game to wind up fourth in the 2-4A standings with a 4-6 record, 7-15 overall. The boys will be trying to end a 26-game loss streak in district play this season, while improving on last year's 4-23 record.

Both Pecos teams will travel to tournaments in Monahans and Fort Stockton in December, while the boys also have tournament play on Nov 29-30 at Andrews. The boys' junior varsity will also host its own tournament on Dec. 6-8 at the Pecos High School gym.

Monahans and Fort Stockton are the boys' other scheduled pre-district home opponents this season, while the girls will host Odessa Permian, Crane and Alpine in December before beginning 2-4A play. The girls close their season with a Feb. 5 game at San Elizario, while the boys end regular season play the following week, with a Feb. 12 home game against Fabens.
