Velasquez completes Army course

Army Sgt. 1st Class Sergio A. Velasquez has graduated from the light-wheel vehicle mechanic advanced non-commissioned officer course at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Aberdeen, Md.

The course is designed for enlisted members to perform the duties of a skill level four unit maintenance supervisor and/or platoon sergeant. It emphasizes leadership, communication, supervision of unit maintenance, logistic management and supervision of recovery operations involving wheeled an tracked vehicles and associated equipment and components.

Velasquez is the son of Ninfa Acosta of Pecos.

He is a 1996 graduate of Pecos High School.

Study club plans trip

The Modern Study Club will meet at 8 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 29, for a Conservation Department program with Etta Sullivan, Department Chairman in charge. The group will car pool at the parking lot of the First Baptist Church and then journey to Carlsbad, N.M., where they will tour the Living Desert State Park with a guide of the park conducting.

A dutch-treat luncheon will follow at the Golden Corral Restaurant in Carlsbad.

The thought-quote for the meeting is _ "As soils are depleted, human health, vitality and intelligence go with them." _ Louis Bromfield.

Roll call will be answered by giving the name of a native animal you saw in the zoological exhibits. Lena Harpham, Federation Counselor, will give a report during the business session conducted by President Travland.

Project emphasis for this bi-monthly meeting is maintenance of the West of the Pecos Museum Bridal Suite and other contributions to the West of the Pecos Museum.

Catherine Travland will join Sullivan with hostess duties.
