New program helps students with college

Recent high school graduates seeking financial aid for college have a new option known as the TEXAS Grant Program, which helps Texas students attend public and private nonprofit institutions of higher education in Texas.

The TEXAS (Toward Excellence, Access and Success) Grant Program, created by the 76th Texas Legislature, is restricted to students who have graduated from a Texas high school no earlier than May 2000.

"The TEXAS Grant Program is a major financial assistance program that many students may not know about," said Odessa College student financial services director Tanya Hughes. "The application process is easy, and we want to encourage students to investigate this beneficial program."

To take advantage of the program, students need to fill out a TEXAS Grant application, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and meet eligibility criteria. Once approved, students become eligible for funds that can be applied to the current fall semester retroactively as well as for future semesters.

Hughes added that other state and federal programs also are available.

"For students with financial concerns, OC student financial services has a number of solutions to help," said Hughes. "Students simply need to take the first step by visiting or calling our office."
