Alzheimer's group offers advice
The staff at the Pecos Nursing Home recently had in-service training
about the various ways to communicate with patients that have Alzheimer's
Disease.
Janet Cross, Program Coordinator of the West Texas Chapter of the Alzheimer's
Association, presented the program. Over 40 staff members attended.
Earlier in the day, Cross did another presentation at the Pecos Downtown
Lion's Club meeting at the Quality Inn, giving them an introduction to the
impact that Alzheimer's Disease can have on the patient and the patient's
family.
Some suggestions for good communication are as follows:
Don't reason.
Don't argue.
Don't confront.
Don't remind them that they forget.
Don't question recent memory.
Don't take it personally.
Do give short, one sentence explanations.
Do repeat instructions or sentences exactly the same way.
Do allow plenty of time for comprehension.
Do respond to the feelings rather than the words.
Do be patient, cheerful and reassuring.
The Pecos Daytime Alzheimer's Support Group meets on the second Thursday
of each month at 10 a.m., in the Reeves County Hospital Classroom. The Pecos
Evening Alzheimer's Support Group meets on the fourth Thursday of each month
at 4 p.m. at the Pecos Senior Center.
