Seijas assigned to deployment
Navy Fireman Apprentice Herman J. Seijas, son of Merced J. and Edel A.
De La Garza of Pecos, is halfway through a six-month deployment to the Western
Pacific Ocean and Arabian Gulf while assigned to the guided missile frigate
USS Curtis, home ported in San Diego.
As part of the Middle East Force, Seijas' ship is participating in maritime
interdiction operations to enforce U.N. sanctions restricting trade with
Iraq. While inspecting vessels suspected of violating the sanctions, USS
Curtis is playing a major role in maintaining U.N. policies.
Although the primary mission of Seijas' ship is anti-submarine warfare,
Curtis is also equipped with guns for surface actions and anti-aircraft missiles.
Helicopters with sonar and torpedo capabilities are also embarked aboard.
Seijas is a 2000 graduate of Pecos High School and joined the Navy in
June 2000.
