Bacas take top flight's top spot in K of C's weekend tourney
The team of Ruben and Michael Baca took first place in the Championship
Flight of the Knights of Columbus Golf Tournament, held over the weekend
at the Reeves County Golf Course.
The Bacas shot a 63-68-131 to win by four strokes over Paul Hinojos
and Steve Valenzuela, who shot a 67-68-135. Michael Benavides finished
third with a 69-70-139, after finishing in a four-way tie at the end of
regulation and then winning a playoff on the first hole.
There were four flights in the two-day tournament. In the First Flight,
Mike and Carla Claburn won first place with a 72-67-139, one stroke ahead
of Robin Land and Betsy Sikes, who shot a 73-67-140. Joe and Manuel Carrillo
took third place, shooting a 75-66-141.
Gilbert Herrera and Ralph Nunez won the Second Flight title with a 148
score over 36 holes, after a round of 76 on Saturday and 72 on Sunday.
They defeated the team of Fredrich and Alfred Chavez in a playoff, after
they also shot 76-72-148. Jimmy Martinez and John Morrow were third, with
a 78-72-150 total.
In the third flight, Orlando Leyva and Jeff Mills shot an 82-69-151
to win first place, two strokes up on the team of Shawn Brugette and Fred
Cabarrubo, who had a 79-74-153 for the tournament. The team of Torres and
Monclova placed third with a 79-75-154 score.
"I want to thank all the people who sponsored us and all the people
participating in the Knights of Columbus Tournament," said Erasmo Acosta
of the Reeves County Golf Course, who helped organize the tournament. "We
especially want to thank all the volunteers who came out to help with the
tournament."
Youth football, volleyball sign-ups continue
Reeves County Community Sports and Recreation Department is enrolling children
for its PeeWee Football and youth volleyball leagues between now and mid-August
Parents of children who are in Grades 3-6 who want to participate in
the football program can pick up enrollment forms at the recreation office,
located in the old Pecos High School gym, during regular hours. Entry deadline
is Monday, Aug. 20 and the cost is $25 per child.
Sign-ups for youth volleyball will continue through Friday, Aug. 17
at the old Pecos High School gym. RCCRD Director Nora Geron said the league
is also open to children in Grades 3-6, with a registration fee of $10
per child.
Parents registering their children for either football or volleyball
should bring a birth certificate to the RCCRD office, and both parents'
signatures will be needed on the registration form.
