Summer hoop camp numbers up for Eagles

Participation was up this year for the Pecos-Barstow-Toyah summer basketball clinic, and boys' basketball coach Tino Acosta said the number of Pecos players in the area summer basketball league is also up from previous years.

"The camp had 39 kids this year," he said. "The first year we had only 10 and last year we had 20 kids, so it's way up. We had so many kids this year we had to have two different sessions."

The camp was held last week, while the summer league program has been going on throughout June. Acosta said the team, which is coached by Jon Cook, would be playing in Monahans this coming Tuesday night, and is 2-3 so far during the summer season.

"We've had some real great help from the parents. They're helping us get the kids (to the out-of-town games), which is something we didn't know how we were going to do," Acosta said.

"I'm really proud of the kids who have been playing in this league, because we're the only squad that's made every game," he added.

The Eagles have struggled over the past several seasons in boys' basketball, but do return most of their players off last year's squad for the 2001-2002 season. For the summer league and open gym, Acosta said, "The varsity squad has been showing up, along with several of our JVers and freshmen."

"The great thing about the summer league is I think I found some diamonds in the rough who I really think are going to help us," Acosta said.

Beginning next week, open gym for basketball is on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the new Pecos High School gym, with the girls going from 6 to 8 p.m. and the boys from 7 to 9 p.m.
