Eagles to kick-off season in August for first time

The Pecos Eagles football season will be starting in  August for the first time in 2001, when they take on the Kermit Yellowjackets  in the first of their five pre-district games.

The Eagles' 2001 football schedule includes home games against former _ and possibly future _ district rivals Fort Stockton and Monahans, while Pecos will play three of their five District 2-4A games out of town this season. The Kermit game will be played during the "zero week" which began five years ago but was only used by the Eagles for the first time last season. It allows Pecos to take a week off before the start of district play in October.

The Eagles went 6-5 last season, finishing second in the district standings to El Paso Mountain View before falling to El Paso Parkland in the bi-district round of the Class 4A playoffs. Mountain View will be one of Pecos' three out-of-town games in district, on Nov. 2, with the others being their 2-4A opener on Oct. 12 at Clint and at Canutillo on Oct. 26.

Their two home games in district play are on Oct. 19, and Nov. 9 against Fabens and San Elizario, while they'll host Fort Stockton on Sept. 7 and Monahans on Sept. 28, which will also be the 2001 homecoming game for the Eagles. This season, Pecos' home games will start at 8 p.m. during pre-district play and at 7:30 p.m. for their 2-4A contests, while the road game starting times are reversed _ the Eagles will kick off their pre-district games in September at Alpine and Presidio at 7:30 p.m., while their 2-4A contests after that will start at 8 p.m. Central time, 30 minutes earlier than last season.

The Eagles will have one other out-of-town trip on their schedule, an Aug. 18 scrimmage at Carlsbad, starting at 11 a.m. CDT. Pecos' junior varsity team will also scrimmage at Carlsbad that day, while the freshmen will host the Cavemen in their Aug. 18 scrimmage.
