Eagles place 8 on all-district team

By JON FULBRIGHT
Staff Writer

Eight members of the Pecos Eagles' 2001 varsity baseball  team were selected to the All-District 2-4A Baseball Team, seven of those  being selected to the first team squad.

The team was selected two weeks ago following completion and regular season play and released on Saturday, after the Eagles were eliminated by Canyon from the area round of the Class 4A playoffs.

Pitchers Barney Rodriguez and Angel Villalobos, catcher Mason Abila, infielders Richard Rodriguez and Alex Garcia and outfielders David Elkins and Rigo Ramirez were first team selections, and infielder Matthew Levario was a second team pick in voting by the 2-4A coaches.

Eagles' coach Bubba Williams was also named co-Coach of the Year with San Elizario's Jesse Munoz. Pecos beat out San Elizario by one game for the district title, finishing with a 9-1 record in 2-4A play and 20-8 overall after their three-game loss to Canyon at Big Spring this past weekend.

Abila led the Eagles in batting this season with a .417 average and lost out by one vote to Fabens' J.R. Ontiveros for Most Valuable Player honors in District 2-4A, Williams said. He led Pecos in triples with three, tied with Villalobos for the team lead in home runs (3) and doubles (8) and had 25 RBI. The junior was named to the all-district team for the third straight season and was the only repeat first-team selection for Pecos.

Villalobos went 6-1 on the mound this season and batted .300, while leading the team in RBI with 27. The senior struck out 49 and walked 18 in 51 innings of work, after missing all of last season due to injury.

Barney Rodriguez finished with an 8-1 record, stiking out 54 and walking 25 in 54 innings or work. The sophomore also led the team with a 2.92 earned run average and battled .360 with 25 RBI.

Richard Rodriguez was named to the team at shortstop, though he split his time between there and second base this season. Rodriguez batted .406 with 17 RBI.

Garcia led Pecos in runs scored this season with 36 and was second in RBI with 26 while batting .393. The senior spent time at three different positions this season, center field, second base and first base.

Elkins and Ramirez joined Rodriguez as the other sophomores on the first team for the Eagles. Elkins batted .365 with 20 RBI and led the team in walks with 28 while playing right field, while Ramirez split time between left field and center field and hit .408, with 15 RBI.

Levario was the fourth Eagle sophomore named to the squad, as second team third baseman. He batted .318 this season and hand 9 RBI while also playing part-time in left field.

Unlike last year's senior-dominated team, underclassmen took up most of the spots in the 2-4A squad this season. Aside from Ontiveros, a junior pitcher/catcher, Fabens put freshman pitcher George Sanchez on the first team, and had one senior selected, outfielder Humberto Nunez. Fabens finished third in 2-4A and was beaten by El Paso Burges in the bi-district round of the Class 4A playoffs, while runner-up San Elizario lost to El Paso Ysleta in the bi-district round.

San Elizario also had a freshman first-team selection, in outfielder Jose Perez. Their other first team picks were junior pitcher Bo Solis, junior second baseman Jose Herrera, and junior outfielder Angel Muela.

Clint had the only senior pitcher selected besides Villalobos, in Bobby Morales, while junior David Medles was selected in the outfield and another junior Mike Fierro, was named Newcomer of the Year.

Canutillo and El Paso Mountain View's first team selections were all seniors. Canutillo put first baseman Manny Jimenez, third baseman Jesse Ramirez and outfielder Eddie Hita on the squad, and Mountain View had only one selection, outfielder Carlos Gonzales.
