Math-A-Thon at third grade school proves to be success

PECOS, April 26, 2001 - Pecos Elementary held a Fun Night recently and the event was planned and coordinated by Patricia Mosser who said the contest was based on the TV show, but the questions were drawn directly from the 13 math objectives students are expected to master in the third grade.

The event was intended to make math fun as well as give them an incentive to learn. She also said she hoped to make it an annual event because of the enthusiastic response received from students.

"Next year I hope to have the contest during the last hour of school so that every student has an opportunity to participate," said Mosser. "There are a few changes I would like to make next year, but all in all I was very pleased with how things went," she said.

"I think it gave us a very solid foundation to build on next year," said Mosser. "It was a team effort and everyone's hard work and dedication was greatly appreciated," she said.

The Grand Prize winner of a 13 inch color television was German Rodriguez; second place winner of a 15-speed mountain bike was Gus Mendoza and the third place winner of a CD player was Parker Johnson.

Other winners included fourth place, Monica Diaz; fifth place, Tazia Winkles; 6th place, Mario Alba and seventh place, Ruben Carrasco.

Ask the audience members were parents of students from Pecos Elementary and some Phone-a-Friend members were Michael Blanchard, Cruz Nieto, Becky Diaz and others.
