Errors plague Eagle teams in Alpine tourney opener

PECOS, March 15, 2001 - The Pecos Eagles and San Elizario Eagles took advantage of each other's mistakes to put a bunch of runs on the scoreboard this morning in the opening round of the Alpine Tournament.

Pecos held a 13-6 lead after 4½ innings of this morning's error-filled game. A win will move the Eagles into a 12:15 p.m. game Friday against either Van Horn or Alpine's purple team, and a win there would move the Eagles into a 9:30 p.m. semifinal game Friday against either Midland Greenwood or Presidio. A loss today would drop Pecos into an 8 a.m. game on Friday.

Robert Ceballos, 1-4, ran into both control problems and problems with his defense while lasting only 1 2/3 innings on the mound. Two of the errors were by Ceballos on bad pickoff throws to first, setting up the Eagles' first run in the first inning, and then scoring two runs in the second, after Alex Garcia walked with two outs and the bases loaded.

Mason Abila then scored Garcia on an infield hit and came home on a double by Angel Villalobos. Singles by Barney Rodriguez and Joey Ortega added two more runs.

The Eagles added two more runs with two outs in the third off reliever Rigo Esparza on a single by Barney Rodriguez, following a walk to Garcia and a single by Abila.

The runs offset two allowed by Magana in the bottom of the second inning, as he also struggled with his control and ran into problems on defense, including his own bad pickoff throw in the second inning.

Magana allowed the first two runners to reach base in each of the first four innings, but got out of trouble in the first with a pair of strikeouts, while allowing runs in the second on an Enrquie Adame ground out and Angel Muela sacrifice fly, and a throwing error by Matthew Levario in the third, on a fielder's choice ground out by Jaime Reyes.

In the third, a dropped pop up by Richard Rodriguez set up three more San Elizario runs, on a ground out and two-run single by Jose Herrera.
