Children should select appropriate sports
PECOS, March 2, 2001 - Participating in sports is a great way to engage
in physical activity. Conferring with a pediatrician can help ensure the
activity is a good fit for the child.
Before selecting a sports activity, parents need to assess children's
interests and whether their skills are suited to the sport. Children should
be given the opportunity to try a sport, unless there is an obvious reason
why they should not.
"Your child's doctor can do a pre-participation sports examination to
determine if there is a medical reason not to participate," said Dr. Albert
Hergenroeder, chief of Adolescent and Sports Medicine at Texas Children's
Hospital. "It's unusual for a child to be excluded for a medical condition,
unless it obviously precludes participation in the sport. However, we need
to start adapting sports for children with special health-care needs. This
will provide venues for them to participate in sports."
