Orozco named to honor roll at TSTC

PECOS, February 13, 2001 - David Lopez Orozco earned a place on the President's Honor Roll for the Fall Semester at Texas State Technical College (TSTC) in Waco.
Orozco is a student in the Biomedical Equipment Technology program.
The President's Honor Roll recognizes the scholastic achievement of students with of students with a perfect grade point average of 4.0.
Texas State Technical College in Waco is part of the only state-supported technical college system in Texas. Other campuses are located in Harlingen, Marshall, and Sweetwater. For six consecutive years, TSTC Waco has produced more graduates earning associate degrees in engineering-related technologies than any other public two-year college in America, according to Community College Week. With more than 30 instructional programs in critical and emerging technologies, TSTC is preparing a workforce to meet the demands of industries and businesses.

Nursing home residents enjoy programs

PECOS, February 13, 2001 - Residents of the Pecos Nursing Home attended the monthly cooking class held on Monday, Feb. 5 and presented by Becky Gray.
Becky Gray, "Better Living for Texans," program assistant, was on hand to present the special program. The program within the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, hosted the class. Gray demonstrated the preparation of a sugar free snack.
Residents and employees enjoyed the Strawberry Short Cake _ made with Angel food cake.
In September, Gray presented a program titled, "cutting out the fat," in which she used two grades of hamburger meat and the residents had the opportunity to see the difference in the amount of fat which each hamburger meat contained. Residents enjoyed "delicious and nutritious" chalupas.
She has been on hand each month presenting a different program and encouraging both residents and employees to join in the fun.
"Healthy Snacks" was the topic at the program held in October. The group discussed baked potato, fat free sour cream versus yogurt, light butter versus regular butter.
A homemade soup was enjoyed by all in November, during the "Eating Light" program held at the home and everyone asked for seconds.
In December, "Eating Healthy," was the topic. Residents made Rice Krispie Bars and made enough for an evening program snack.
"Keeping Snacks Healthy" was the program for January, and everyone had the chance to make Orange Smoothy.
The residents have learned about the different food groups and eating healthy.
Volunteer Linda Steen has been leading the Pecos Nursing Home in exercise activity, which began in August. The residents are keeping fit and limber by following the lead of Mrs. Steen.
Steen comes three times a week to lead the very important activity of exercise. She uses music, scarves and moroccas during the activity. The residents are entertained as they exercise.

Gordita plate sale planned

PECOS, February 13, 2001 - A gordita plate sale will be held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., Friday, Feb. 16, at Santa Rosa Hall.
Plate comes with: two gorditas, available with chili verde con carne or asado, with rice and beans for $4. Individual gorditas will be available for $1.50.
