Fuentes celebrates 90th birthday

Jose Orona Fuentes celebrated his 90th birthday on Feb. 7.

He started his day early that morning with a haircut by Lee Ryan at Ryan's Barber Shop. "I was so excited to take my grandfather for a haircut! He probably took me many a time to get mine cut," said Daniel Tarango, his grandson from Denver, Colo.

"I'm 37 years old and can't imagine what it would be like to be 90 years old," said Tarango.

Later that afternoon, Fuentes celebrated his 90th triumph with a house birthday party in Green Acres. He had visitors from as far away as Vallejo, California (northern) and Denver, Colo.

Fuentes was a cotton farmer, originally from Balmorhea, and also worked for what was once called, the Texas Highway Department, for 35 years.

He says he has had a long life life due to no smoking, no drinking and eating the right kinds of food.

He has three daughters, three sons and 15 grandchildren.

Study club plans meeting

The Modern Study Club will be holding a Federation Day Program at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 14, in the parlor of the First Christian Church, with Lena Harpham, Federation Counselor, in charge.

Special guest speaker will be Peggy Kelton of McCamey, President of the Western District of the Texas Federation of Women's Clubs, who will present thoughts concerning Federation.

The thought-quote for the special meeting is "We seek to strengthen our unity and broaden our diversity" _ Shelby P. Hamlett, General Federation of Women's Clubs International President.

A Federation skit prepared by Joyce Morton will be presented by club members in honor of President Kelton.

Roll call will be answered by telling an advantage of being a member of Federation.

Projects for this bi-monthly meeting are to contribute to the TFWC Scholarship Funds and to support the Western District Standing Rules.

Margie Williamson, Pearl Gustafson and Paula Fuller will serve as hostesses for the gathering.
