Eagles open, close baseball season on road

PECOS, Jan. 11, 2001 -- The 2001 baseball season will begin and end on the road for the Pecos Eagles, with three out of town scrimmages before their regular season opener in February and three trips to the El Paso area to close out their District 2-4A schedule in April.

The Eagles will scrimmage Odessa Permian, Fort Stockton and Midland Greenwood on the road, then begin the 2001 season with a home-and-home matchup against Monahans on Feb. 23-24, followed by a home game against Fort Stockton on Feb. 27.

Coach Bubba Williams’ team will have three tournaments this season, starting with the Sandhills Tournament in Monahans on Mar. 1-3. Pecos will go to Midland and Alpine for tournaments the next two weekends, then open 2-4A play at home on Mar. 23, against defending district champion Clint. The Lions beat out the Eagles for the 2-4A title and both teams were later eliminated in the area round of the Class 4A playoffs, Pecos in three games by Pampa and Clint in two by Canyon.

Pecos will play four of their first five district games at home this season, then close out with four of their final five games on the road, including the last three, at Canutillo, El Paso Mountain View and San Elizario. All of the El Paso-area games will be 5 p.m. Pecos time starts, and the Eagles will have to make three midweek road trips, to Fabens, Clint and Mountain View, this season.

The Eagles’ opening games against Monahans will follow the junior varsity opening games, also against the Loboes on Feb. 23-24. The JV will have two tournaments this season, in Odessa and Marfa, and will spend most of March on the road, before closing out their season with four straight home games.

The freshmen have one tournaments scheduled, at Kermit on Mar 1-3, and will play four doubleheaders out of their six other scheduled dates in 2001. The ninth graders single games will be their season opener, on Feb. 24 at home against Greenwood, and their final game, on Apr. 3, also at home against Odessa High
