Holly-day Blood Drive set

A Holly-day Blood Drive will be held from noon until 7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 5, at the Reeves County Hospital, 2323 Texas Street.

There is an urgent need for blood in our area and hospital patients are counting on us for support, especially during the holiday season.

Guest speaker at garden club shares tips

The Merry Home and Garden Club met recently in the parlor of the First Christian Church. The hostess for the meeting was Grace Box.

The meeting was called to order by the president, Gretchen Luna. The collect was read, led by Eula Bolinger. The minutes of the previous meeting was read by the secretary, Melanie Parker and the treasurer's report was given by Doris Moorman, who then announced the progress of the Fruitcake sales.

The guest speaker was Reba Hall, who is a master gardener from Wickett. She is the past president, vice-president of the Ward County Master Gardeners.

Mrs. Hall's interests are family, cooking, water gardening, gardening, trees and roses.

Hall gave an interesting report on the correct way to trim trees and stated that trees will die if the tops are chopped off and limbs should be cut next to a larger limb and next to a branch collar.

She suggested using Miracid and Nitrate for trees. Also Osmocote may be used. Hall said that Spring applications feed for Winter and Winter applications feed for Spring.

After the program, plans were made for the December meeting. The meeting was then adjourned.

Navarrete namedSumma Cum Laude

Jose J. Navarrete received an Odessa College Certificate of Recognition Summa Cum Laude for the Spring Semester.

This certificate recognizes the highest level of academic achievement a student can earn at Odessa College in a single semester. To be eligible for the honor of being named Summa Cum Laude, the student must be enrolled in 12 or more semester hours and must receive grades of "A" in all classes.

Orona finishes course in Hawaii

Army Spec. Roger J. Orona has graduated from the U.S. Army Primary Leadership Development Course (PLDC) at Schofield Barracks, Oahu, Hawaii.

During the five-week course, the soldier learned basic leadership and counseling skills, and perform duties and execute responsibilities of a junior noncommissioned officer; train and lead soldiers to work and fighter under supervision of the battle-competent, first-level noncommissioned officer. The course included written and physical fitness tests, and hands-on field training and land navigation exercises.

Orona, an infantry team leaders, is assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry.

He is the son of Frank M. and Susie J. Orona of Pecos and a 1996 graduate of Pecos High School.
