Bears put four on 3-A volleyball team

PECOS, Nov. 8, 2000 --  Balmorhea Bears' sophomore Julia Garlick was named  Outstanding Setter in District 3-A, and thee other Bears were named to the first  and second teams on the All-District 3-A volleyball squad, announced  on Tuesday.

Junior Tobi Gomez and senior Celina Rodriguez were first  team selections for the Bears, while freshman Amber Briceno was  named to the second team in voting by the district's coaches.

"Julia was a unanimous selection. All the coaches thought she did an excellent job," said Balmorhea coach Gary Gallego. "Celina was second in the voting for Outstanding Hitter, and Amber lost out by one vote for Newcomer of the Year."

Gallego said Garlick was successful on 94 percent of her set attempts and had a 48 percent assist rate during the season, while Rodriguez led Balmorhea with 46 kills and Briceno had the team's best kill ratio, at just over 47 percent with 26 kills. "She also led the team in blocks" the Bears' coach added.

In addition to the four players on the first and second teams, Gallego said sophomore Janie Jones was one of nine players to earn honorable mention from the district's coaches.

The results were far better this season for the Bears than they have been in recent years, even though Balmorhea's 1-5 district record didn't look that much better than the 0-6 mark of a year earlier. The Bears finished the season at 12-12 and got their only 3-A victory over district runner-up Grandfalls.

District champion Wink put eight players on the first two teams, including Most Valuable Player Mallory Bryan, a junior. Sophomore Ella Fernandes beat out Rodriguez for Outstanding Hitter, while Ashley Abila, a junior, was chosen as Outstanding Defensive Player. Another sophomore, Silena Boatright of Buena Vista, beat out Briceno for the Newcomer award.

Sophomore Jodi Graham and freshman Dallas Thomas were the other first team players for Wink, while three sophomores, Kelli Brenham, Lindsay Graham and Keli Gunn, were second-team selections.

The other first team picks were Buena Vista's Christy Martinez and Grandfalls' Maria Ramirez, both seniors, while Grandfalls junior Erica Anaya and Buena Vista senior Jennifer Graham round out the second team selections.

The team was released after Wink lost to Water Valley and Grandfalls was defeated by Bronte in the area round of the Class A volleyball playoffs last week.
