Felts enjoys Air Force life, new position

A former Barstow resident is enjoying life in the military and states that work and fun do mix.

Colonel Ernest E. Felts is the new vice commander for the 22nd Air Refueling Wing at McConnell Air Force Base, after serving as the support group commander at Columbus AFB, Miss.

"Cowboy" is the radio call sign Felts first began using as KC-135 and KC-10 pilot. But like most knicknames, it's quite appropriate, since Felts is originally from Texas.

This long, tall Texan is excited about the military and about the simple joys of life.

McConnell Air Force Base personnel can look forward to meeting this fun loving colonel during the next few weeks as he gets around on base, trying to meet as many people as possible.

"I like people. I like to be involved. I like to be out and about," said Felts.

While touring the base, or anytime, Felts says he is interested in hearing from officers. His desire to make the term, "open-door policy," more than just a catch phrase. As he tours the base, he hopes he can project his openness to base personnel.

He also hopes to communicate his commitment to excellence. His expectations are simple but demanding.

"I expect each and every person to give me their best, to come prepared each and every day," said Felts.

To his position as vice commander, Felts brings a balance mixture of experience, with considerable air refueling operations experience. He's been assigned to the 909th Air Refueling Squadron at Kadena Air Base, Japan, the 34th Air Refueling Squadron, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, N.C. and the 351st Air Refueling Squadron, RAF Mildenhall, UK. As a pilot, he has more than 3,300 hours of flight experience, with most of it coming in the KC-135 and KC-10. In addition to operations experience.

He comes to McConnelll from Columbus Air Force Base, Miss. Since February 1999, he served as Support Group Commander of the 14th Flying Training Wing.

Felt stated that the support group experience helped broaden him more to many of the technical programs that make a base run.

"I learned how they mingle together to help define a cohesive team that make an Air Force run efficiently," said Felts.

Felts is a dedicated family man and sports enthusiast when he is not on duty. He married his college sweetheart, Sharon. They have twin eight-year-old boys Travis and William.

A lifelong sports enthusiast, Felts says now, he watches more than he plays. He's been a Dallas Cowboys fan since he was a child. Other favorite teams includes an all-Texas lineup; the San Antonio Spurs, the Texas Rangers, and the Dallas Stars. Now that he's in Kansas, he says he may support the Kansas City Chiefs.

In high school, he played on his school tennis team and at Mildenhall, his basketball team won the base championship. He also admits to being a pretty good softball player and enjoys playing golf.

Felts is a 1972 graduate of Pecos High School and a graduate of San Angelo State University.

He is the son of Elizabeth Seltz of Barstow.
