School plans Open House

Austin Elementary School, 1501 Veterans Blvd., will host Open House, at 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 28.

Everyone is invited to come meet the new principal and visit with the teachers.

Picture Day at that school is Tuesday, Sept. 19. All students will have their picture taken.

Arredondo baby born in August

Tammy Natividad and Lee Arredondo are proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Angel Lee Arredondo, on Sunday, Aug. 27 at Monahans Memorial Hospital.

She weighed seven pounds, 12 ounces and was 19 ½ inches long.

Maternal grandparents are Lisa Natividad and Rene Rodriguez. Paternal grandparents are Gloria Arredondo and Javier Arredondo. Great grandmother is Consuelo Natividad.

Stretching is key to beating pain

It's not a stretch to think you can recover from plantar fasciitis, one of the most common causes of heal pain.

"Plantar fasciitis involves inflammation of the fibrous band of tissue that runs along the sole of the foot," said Dr. Kevin Varner with Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

The inflammation usually crops up when someone begins a new exercise program, or as part of the normal aging process. The same exercises that stretch the achilles tendon will help stretch the bottom of the foot where the problem is.

Varner says people with this problem should limit exercise, take anti-inflammatory medications, and wear comfortable shoes.

Smoking parents can lessen effects

Parents who smoke can take steps to lessen the effects of secondhand smoke on children.

"Parents who smoke should do so outside the home, designate a well-ventilated room in the home where there is a fresh, outside air exchange, or wait until children go to bed," Dr. Marianna Sockrider with Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's Hospital in Houston.

Never smoke with children in the car, and chose to sit in non-smoking sections. Studies have shown secondhand smoke can cause respiratory problems and an increased chance of ear infections in children.
