Pecos varsity, freshmen start with victories
PECOS, Aug. 25, 2000 -- The Pecos Eagles’ freshman volleyball team
posted a 5-1 record on Thursday, as they advanced to the championship round
of their bracket at the Cantaloupe Classic Volleyball Tournament at the
Pecos High School gym.
Play continued this morning with the varsity and junior varsity division.
The varsity began by tossing a shutout at the El Paso Riverside Rangers,
winning by 15-4, 15-4 (11-0, 11-0) scores. They were scheduled to face
Kermit a 1:10 p.m. and Van Horn at 5:20 p.m. in their other pool matches.
There was one down note for Pecos, as setter Jessica Rodriguez suffered
a possible broken nose when a falling D’Andra Ortega elbowed her after
a spike during Game 2. Coach Veronica Valenzuela said Rodriguez was going
to Reeves County Hospital for X-rays after the game.
Valenzuela was coaching the team again in place of head coach Becky
Granado, whose father died overnight at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa.
The freshmen swept Monahans and Crane while splitting with Wink in their
pool matches on Thursday. The Eagles downed the Loboes, 15-8, 15-4, and
beat the Cranes, 15-4, 15-9, while in-between splitting with the Wildcats,
winning 15-8, then falling by a 15-6 score.
The JV opened their bracket at 9 a.m. with a 15-13, 15-10 loss to Odessa
High.
