Valles named officer of month

Bonnie Valles was named as the Correctional Officer of the Month for July, at the Reeves County Detention Center.

Valles began her career as Correctional Officer on Feb. 8, 1999.

Officer Valles has enhanced and simplified programs that have been implemented recently in the Custody Department, according to Reeves County Detention Center Warden Rudy Franco.

"Her suggestion to enhance the present inmate accountability system has made the procedure more effective," said Franco.

Valles is a complete and knowledgeable officer who is willing to give that extra effort in order to do an outstanding job.

"Valles is deserving of this award for all her work and dependability," said Franco. "We are extremely proud of her and wish her continued success in her career at the Reeves County Detention Center," he said.

The bride-elect is the daughter of John W. and Kathy McLemore of Gardendale. She attended Odessa High School and is currently enrolled at Odessa College.

Her fiance is the son of Richard and Gloria Sparks of Odessa. He attended Odessa High School and is employed by Red Simpson, Inc. of Odessa.

Sleep is important for learning

Getting plenty of sleep will help children concentrate in the classroom.

"Missing sleep causes most of the day's experiences to be stored inefficiently in the brain," said Dr. Bruce Perry, a child psychiatrist at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. "Interactions with teachers, book chapters and lectures are harder to remember if a child is sleep deprived," he said.

Perry adds that students should study a little bit at a time, instead of cramming for tests. Resting for a while after studying will help them process the information properly in the brain.
