Eagles to open practice with new offense

By JON FULBRIGHT
Staff Writer

PECOS, Aug. 4, 2000 -- Preseason practice will be a little different for the Pecos  Eagles beginning on Monday, when workouts for the 2000 season  get underway at the Pecos High School practice field.

In-service for teachers next week means the usual two-a-day drills will be condensed down into nightly three-hour workouts for the Eagles' varsity, junior varsity and freshmen teams next, week, but for some players there will be a little extra work to do, according to head coach Gary Grubbs.

"We're going to go on the field at 5 p.m. with the running backs, quarterbacks and receivers. A 5:30 we'll work a specialty period with kickers, punters and drop-snappers and kick return group. Then we'll return at 6 to begin the rest of the practice," Grubbs said.

"We're running the option this year, so we need to spend a lot of time of the mesch between our quarterbacks and running backs pitching the ball," Grubbs said of the early workouts. For the special teams, he said, "Since we're not going to work out the special teams the first week, we wanted to work with the kickers and return people now. We'll start working the special teams when we get back into school, and we'll still have three weeks before playing Kermit (on Sept. 1 in the season opener)."

The Eagles have made the playoffs the last two seasons, getting the third and final berth in 1999 after sharing the District 2-4A title in 1998. But the first pre-season predictions have Pecos finising in fourth in district, behind El Paso Mountain View, San Elizario and Fabens, so the 2000 team will try and surpass those lowered expectations.

"I've seen most of the kids all summer and they're excited to go," said Grubbs, who expects to have about 35 players on the varsity this season and around 40 on the JV.

"I don't know of any kids that won't be there," he said. "I told them they need to be there as practice, because it's hard for us to play people who are not practicing."

Grubbs said next week's full practice will run from 6 to 9 p.m., followed by 30 minutes in the weight room at the field house. The Eagles lone pre-season scrimmage this year will be on Aug. 19 against the Carlsbad Cavemen.
