Pecos hosting annual tennis tourney
PECOS, June 22, 2000 -- About 45 players are expected to compete on Friday
at the Pecos High School tennis courts in the Pecos Cantaloupe/Black Gold
Circuit Tennis Tournament.
Pecos Eagles' tennis coach Bernadette Ornelas said the tournament is
part of the series of Black Gold Tournaments across West Texas during the
summer. It will start at 9 a.m. and will continue on Saturday with adult
division matches.
"Basically we'll start all out junior event matches in the morning and
start at the doubles events in the afternoon," Ornelas said. "Right now
we've got close to 45 entries, so it's going to be an all-day event."
Ornelas said along with local entries, there will be players from Monahans,
Odessa, Andrews, Wink and Abilene in the tournament, which is divided by
age groups in both the boys and girls divisions.
The tournament will begin following completion of the Pecos-Barstow-Toyah
summer tennis program. "Today is the last day for the summer program,"
Ornelas said of the USA 1-2-3 Tennis course.
"Overall the kids had a real good time. Some of the kids who have been
in the program in the past developed their games so they will be able to
compete," in the tournament, which has youth divisions of 12 and under,
14 and under, 16 and under an 18 and under.
