Junior netters get two Monahans titles

PECOS, May 4, 2000 -- Two Pecos Eagles junior high tennis players came away with a pair of first place trophies this past weekend, while a third took home a consolation title from tournament play at Walker Junior High School in Monahans.

Eighth grader Natalie Ornelas captured first place in the girls singles division, while Chris Hernandez won the singles titles in the seventh grade boys division this past weekend Whitney Lamb, one of the Eagles' other singles player in the eighth grade girls division, took consolation.

Ornelas defeated Nanette Ramirez of Odessa San Jacinto and Monahans' Savanna West and Chris Escamilla all by 6-0 scores, and then downed the Loboes' Christy Gatzki in the finals, 9-8 (7-1). Lamb lost her opening match to Gatzki, 6-2, then beat Seminole's Roxanna Olivas and Fort Stockton's Vanessa Rocha in the consolation bracket by the same 6-2 score.

The Eagles' third player in the singles division, Chantel Orona, defeated San Jacinto's Erin Cash, 6-3, but then lost to Gatzki by a 6-0 score.

Hernandez won four matches on the way to the eighth grade boys' singles title. He defeated Seminole's Colby Morris, 6-2, Fort Stockton's Brian Rainwater, 6-1, teammate Frankie Hernandez by a 6-1 score and then Seminoles John Dyck, 8-6, in the finals.

Dyke earlier defeated Pecos' Sterling Ingram, though no score was available. Ingram had earlier defeated Brandon Harris of Seminole, 6-1, and his teammate, Jacob Johnson, by a 6-3 score.

In other results, Sara Pena and Cassie Reyes were eliminated in the second round of eighth grade girls' doubles, losing 6-1 to Monahans' Galindo and Martin after a 6-3 win over Fort Stockton's Dennell and Brazell.

In eighth grade boys' singles, Michael Orona defeated Crane's Andrew Hinostroza, 6-1 and Crane's Patrick Garcia, 6-1, before losing to David Nieto of Monahans. No score was available for that match. The other singles player for Pecos, Andrew Ramirez, lost to John Klossen of Seminole, 6-1, and the Eagles had no boys singles teams entered in Monahans.

In seventh grade girls singles, Catherine Garcia and Jennifer Montano won their first round matches before losing in the semifinals, Garcia to Crane's Rachel Choate, 7-5, and Montano to Choate's teammate, Stephanie Morris, 6-1.

The seventh grade girls had two doubles teams entered, with Sara and Adrianne Natividad beating Rapp and Laminack of San Jacinto, 6-0, in their opener before falling to Monahans; Oyerbides and Montoya, 6-1, while Cynthia Pando and Camilla Alvarado lost to Lopez and Sigh of Fort Stockton, 6-1.

Junior High coach Brian Williams said the Eagles would be in Fort Stockton this weekend for the final tournament of the spring schedule.
 

PHS sports banquet set for tonight

PECOS, May 4, 2000 -- The annual Pecos High School All-Sports Banquet will be held tonight at 7 p.m. at the new Pecos High School gym, with tickets still available to the public at $8 per person.

Former Monahans High School head coach and superintendent Jerry Larned will be the guest speaker at the banquet, which will begin at 7 p.m. Athletic director Bubba Williams said tickets will be available at the high school, along with KIUN Radio, Gibson True Value and Dan's Music and Video.

All-district athletes for the Eagles from the 1999-2000 school year will be recognized at the banquet, and the Doc Lunday, Craig Woods, Joe Shoemaker, Norma Matta and Joe Bob Kelton awards will also be announced during the banquet.
