GED Testing planned

GED Testing will be held from 5-9 p.m., on Tuesday, April 4 and Wednesday, April 5.

Registration is scheduled for 1-5 p.m., Monday, April 3, at 320 S. Oak, Suite 4.

Roach nets degree at West Texas

Degrees were officially conferred on 394 West Texas A&M University graduates at the December commencement ceremonies.

Area graduates include Kimberly D. Roach, of Pecos, who earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

The University awarded master's degrees to 82 graduates and bachelor's degrees to 312 graduates.

Graduates with an overall grade point average of 3.50 or higher were recognized as honor graduates and were eligible to wear gold honor cords. The three level of recognition are Cum Laude (3.50-3.74), Magna Cum Laude (3.75-3.89) and Summa Cum Laude (3.90-4.00).

Thirteen graduates received Summa Cum Laude honors. Nine students graduated with Magna Cum Laude honors, and 25 students graduated with Cum Laude honors.

Smith couple honored with farewell lunch

The Friendship Class of the First Baptist Church honored Bill and Edith Smith, with a farewell luncheon on Feb. 24.

Mayor Dorothy Stafford presented the Smiths with a key to the city for their 50 years of community service to the citizens of Pecos.

Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison recognized Mrs. Smith with a letter of appreciation for her 16 years of dedicated service to the "Meals on Wheels" program and for her generous and caring nature. She quoted former President George Bush who said, "any definition of a successful life must include serving others."

Prior to retirement Mrs. Smith was active in the farming industry then worked a number of years for the city of Pecos.

They are members of the First Baptist Church where Mr. Smith served as a deacon.

They have five children, Maxine Hudson of Odessa, Dennis Winterrowd of San Angelo, Lonnie Winterrowd of Martin, Tx., Cary Winterrowd of Gaymon, Okla. and Linda Laughlin of Washington, D.C. All of whom graduated from Pecos High School.

The couple also have 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith will be moving to San Angelo and making their home in Rio Concho West.
