All it takes is a word, that says he understand,
All it takes is a touch from strong but gentle hands,
All it takes is his smile to make a heart feel glad,
All it takes is the thought of him, a very special dad.
And somehow, as the days go by,
One fact kept growing clearer-
Passing years didn’t change your dad,
Except to make you dearer.

“When I Must Leave You”
When I must leave you for a little while
Please do not grieve and shed wild tears
And hug your sorrow to you through the years
But start out bravely with a gallant smile;
And for my sake and in my name live on and do all things the same
Feed not your loneliness on empty days
But fill each waking hour in useful ways
Reach out your hand in comfort and in cheer
And in turn will comfort you and hold you near;
And never, never be afraid to die
For I am waiting for you in the sky!

Few knew, Ed, can be found on the old murals on the Stetson hatboxes as a cowboy with his longtime friends while branding cattle on the Flying U in Marfa, in 1941.
Harwell was a wanderer and you never knew when “the knock” on the door would come and could lend itself to a long visit. This is the Ed we knew and loved. The grass never grew under his feet, because tomorrow he would be gone. Ed roamed between, Ft. Worth, Pecos, El Paso, Columbus, and numerous other towns, depending on when winter was coming, the visit was over, or the work was done.
Today, Ed left the range we all see, to began a new cattle drive, and brand a few, gather some heifers and get ready for the shipping in the fall. He is in a place where the grass is always green and plentiful, the wind always blows and the mill is always turning, rain will always come when needed and cattle bring top dollar. Goodbye, my friend, now looky we will see you soon.
