Neil Hamilton PrewitNeil Hamilton “Skeeter” Prewit, 81, was born on February 7, 1924, to William D. and Margaret Lena Ritz Prewit in Pecos, Reeves County, Texas. Skeeter was called to be with the Lord on May 2, 2005. He was the youngest of ten children. The Ritz and Prewit families were early-day pioneers settling in the Pecos area in the 1880’s, some coming by covered wagon. Skeeter graduated from Pecos High School in 1941 where he was on the football team and was crowned “Football King”. While attending college in El Paso, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and on December 8, he and several Pecos boys boarded the Texas & Pacific traveling to California where he joined the U. S. Navy. Skeeter was 17 years old. After training for three weeks, he shipped out to war in the Pacific on the USS Neosho, a tanker in the Seventh Fleet. At the Battle of Coral Sea, May 7, 1942, which happened to be his mother’s birthday and Mother’s Day, kamikazes attacked. His ship was sunk, and most of the young sailors were killed. Skeeter had learned to swim in the Pecos River, so he gave his life jacket to a young sailor who could not swim before they jumped overboard. Though the sea was aflame, he was able to swim and hang onto timbers for many hours until a life raft picked him up. Because the life raft was overcrowded, he had to stay in the water hanging onto a rope for several more hours until room opened up in the raft. Eventually they were picked up by another ship then transferred to Australia to recuperate. After a short leave in the United States, Skeeter was then assigned to the Neosho II where he stayed for the remainder of the war. He was honorably discharged from active duty in 1945 and remained in the Naval Reserves until 1952. Some of his wartime experiences are chronicled in Alton Hughes 1st Volume of PECOS, A History of the Pioneer West. On his return to civilian life he attended Texas Christian University, majoring in geology. On June 12, 1949, Skeeter and Genora Burkholder were married in Barstow. Most of their lives were spent in Pecos, but a few years were spent in Peru and Argentina, South America, while he worked for Haliburton-Welex. For the last five years they have lived Corpus Christi, Texas, near their daughter. For over 30 years Skeeter was a member of the Pecos Volunteer Fire Department and was instrumental in starting the emergency medical ambulance service.
