Marilyn CovingtonMarilyn “Nana” Covington, 57, of Big Spring, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, at her residence. Memorial services were held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 23, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with Dr. Randy Cotton, pastor of Trinity Baptist Church officiating. She was born Jan. 25, 1947, in Pecos, married Ted Covington on Jan. 22, 1966, was raised in Pecos and graduated from Pecos High School in 1965. She went to Big Spring in 1966 and was a homemaker. Covington was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Adam Wayne Covington. Survivors include her husband, Ted Covington of Big Spring; two daughters, Connie Jo Campos and Judy Newton of Big Spring; one son, Mitch Covington of Big Spring; one sister, Brenda Darden of Odessa; six grandchildren and one nephew. A memorial service will be held from 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, at Joe Jackson Heights Funeral Chapels, 719 Loring at Cortez, in Laredo, with burial on Wednesday, Oct. 27, at 6:45 p.m., in the Encinal Cemetery in Encinal. Walker was preceded in death by her two daughters, Frankie Louise “Lisa” Salinas and Yvonne Holcombe. Survivors include her two sons-in-law, Manuel Salinas of Laredo, Walter Holcombe of Pecos; three grandchildren, Alexandra Salinas, Aguero and Armando Salinas of Laredo, Yvonna Johnson and Scott of Pecos, and Walt Holcombe of North Hollywood, Calif.; six great-grandchildren, Louis Phillips of Burleson, Parker, Zachery and Dylan Johnson of Pecos, Armando Jr. and Rogelio Salinas of Laredo. Mass was held at 10 a.m., Monday, at Santa Rosa Catholic Church with burial in Greenwood Cemetery. He was born Oct. 12, 1929, in Cuchillo, Parado, Chih., Mexico, was in agriculture/retired, a lifetime Pecos resident and a Catholic. Suvivors include his wife, Socorro Tarango Zubiate of Pecos; four sons, Ernesto Zubiate of Gonzales, La., Ruben Zubiate of Freeport, Herbey Zubiate of Pasadena, Cesar Zubiate of Ft. Worth; five daughters, Alma Z. Antillon of Bermejillo, Durango, Mex., Flor Perea of Pecos, Socorro Navarrete of Pecos, Patty Rohana of Ft. Worth; two brothers, Oscar Zubiate of Odessa, Angel Zubiate of Chihuahua, Mex.; three sisters, Carolina Terrazas of Juarez, Mex., Ema Padilla of Chihuahua, Mex., Irma Escodero of Odessa; 21 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Peaceful Garden Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Doris MoormanDoris Marie Mickey Moorman, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004 in El Paso. Graveside services were held on Oct. 9 at Fairview Cemetery in Midland. Moorman was born on Oct. 8, 1927, in Clovis, N.M., to S.E. and Bernese Mickey. She moved to Roswell, N.M., in 1934, then to Midland, in 1936. She graduated from Midland High School in 1944 and from Texas Christian University in 1950. Moorman married James Raymond Moorman on July 26, 1947, in Midland, who then later preceded her in death on March 16, 2004. She lived in Fort Worth, Houston, San Angelo and Midland before moving to Pecos in 1962. Moorman taught kindergarten for two years and music for four years in Midland. After moving to Pecos, she taught first grade for 24 years. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Pecos, taught Sunday School and directed the junior choir. She was also active in many local organizations including: AAUW (president), Merry Home and Garden Club (president and treasurer), The Modern Study Club (vice president) and the Retired Teachers Association (president and secretary). Her parents and two brothers, James F. Mickey and Dale E. Mickey, preceded her in death. Survivors include one son, James Raymond Moorman Jr. and his wife, Patricia of El Paso; one daughter, Carol Moorman Lynch and her husband, Hugh David Lynch Jr. of Metairie; one brother, Howard L. Mickey of Houston; one granddaughter; one step-granddaughter and two grandsons. Rigoberto PerezRigoberto M. Perez, 27, of Pecos, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, at his residence. A rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m., today, Thursday, Oct. 21, at the Peaceful Garden Funeral Home Chapel. Mass is scheduled for 2 p.m., Friday, Oct. 22, at Santa Rosa Catholic Church with Father Gustavo Lopez officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. He was born Jan. 15, 1977, in McAllen, was a laborer, a longtime Pecos resident and a Catholic. Survivors include his wife, Debra Flores of Pecos; his parents, Sergio and Celia Perez of Balmorhea; two sons, Ruben Flores and Ezequiel Iracheta of Pecos; four daughters, Chestidy Flores, Maria Perez, Carmen Perez and Alejandra Arciniega of Pecos; two brothers, Sergio Perez of Oklahoma, Albert Perez of Pecos and one sister, Brenda Perez of Alpine. A memorial service was held at 2 p.m., Sunday, with Rev. Greer Willis officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery. He was born Feb. 20, 1931, in Littlefield, was rancher, a long time Pecos resident and a Baptist. McNeil was preceded in death by his parents, L.D. and Florence McNeil; one sister, Yvonne McNeil and one brother, Jackie McNeil. Survivors include his wife, Glinda McNeil of Pecos; one son, Billy Rex McNeil of El Paso; one daughter, Jeanne Holt of Carlsbad, N.M.; two brothers, Floyd McNeil of El Paso, Jimmy McNeil of Presidio and three grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, at Santa Rosa Catholic Church witih Father Gustavo Lopez officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. She was born Dec. 6, 1958, in Delicias, Chihuahua, Mexico, was a homemaker, a long time Pecos resident and a Catholic. Survivors include her husband, Mario Solis of Pecos; one son, Mario A. Solis of Midland; three daughters, Amy Caballero of Pecos, Cynthia and Ashley Solis of Pecos; her parents, Manuel and Alicia Zepeda of Delicias, Chih., Mexico; one brother, Humberto Cepeda of Anaheim, Calif.; four sisters, Anna Louisa Gonzales, Rosa Maria Barajas and Olga Zepeda of Delicias, Chih., Mexico, Norma Martinez of Friona, Tx. Pecos Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Jesus Michael LujanOur beloved son, brother and uncle, Jesus Michael Lujan, went to be in the hands of our Father on Oct. 9, 2004. Michael was born on May 17, 1978 and spent his first few years of life battling cancer. He later went into remission where he remained until his tragic, untimely death. Michael graduated from Monahans High School in 1996. He spent much of his time assisting with the family business, a local frame shop named after him, J. Michaelís Creations. Much of his leisure time was spent with his Australian Shepard, Clay. Our fighter did not lose his fight with cancer and he was most proud of the fact that he was a survivor. He will best be remembered for his spirit, kind heart and willingness to extend a helping hand. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., on Thursday, Oct. 14, at St. Johnís Catholic Church in Monahans with Father John Lucido officiating. Interment will follow at Monahans Memorial Cemetery. A rosary ceremony was held at St. Johnís Catholic Church Wednesday night from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m., at Heritage Funeral Home. Funeral services are under the direction of Heritage Funeral Home. Pallbearers are Frank Flores, Ron Williams, Jimmy Samaniego, Jeremy Galvan, Ismael Valenzuela and David Melendez, Jr. Honorary pallbearer is Chon Garcia. Michael is survived by his parents, Marcos and Betty Lujan; grandparents, Petra Lujan, Robert and Anita Naegele; a brother Marcos Lujan, Jr. of Monahans and two sisters, Kimberly Ortega of Odessa and Carol Bamford of Midland. He touched the lives of many more family and friends throughout his young life and he will truly be missed. We love you Mike! Anna Marie BurkeAnna Marie Burke, 72, died Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004. Graveside services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 12, at Mt. Evergreen Cemetery, with Leslie Woodard officiating. She was born Jan. 5, 1932, in Perrin, to Roy Lee and Anna Chloe Slaughter. She lived in Graham, later moved to Wink, where she spent her high school years, married Curtis Devine Burke, on June 8, 1950. They were married for 39 years before he preceded her in death on Jan. 12, 1989. Burke had been a resident of Pecos for 51 years. Survivors include her nine children: Debbie Moore and husband, Monroe of Bronte; Christy and John Sturgeon of San Angelo; Sherry Walser of Elk Creek, Mo.; Tammy and Wally Moon of Pecos; Shawn and Bill Woodlee of Buffalo Gap, Tx.; Rhonda and Michael Jaquez of Austin; Curtis and Karen Burke of Lexington, Tx.; Kim and Harvey Gonzales of Pecos; Cory and Monica Burke of Hutto; 24 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Pecos Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Everette WoodEverette J. Wood, 86, died Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, in Tucson, Ariz. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 13, at Mt. Evergreen Cemetery. He was born in Wagon Mound, N.M., May 11, 1918, moved to Pecos an early age, attended Pecos High School and worked for the Postal Service in Pecos for 36 years. He retired in 1975 and moved to Abilene. During World War II he served in the European Theater of Operations with the U.S. Army’s 14th Armored Division from 1941 to 1946. Wood was preceded in death by one son, Leslie Luke Wood in 1959 and his wife, Wyvonne Loren Wood in 1999. Survivors include two sons, Glen W. Wood of Abilene and Jesse F. Wood of Tucson, Ariz. Memorials may be sent to the West Texas Rehab Center in Abilene. Bartolo CarrilloBartolo “Dick” Carrillo, 83, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at his residence. Services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Oct. 8, at Iglesia De Cristo. Carrillo was born Aug. 24, 1921, in Balmorhea to Jose Maria and Valentina Carrillo, attended Iglesia De Cristo, was a World War II Veteran and a lifelong Pecos resident. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Isabel Carrillo; one brother, Basilio B. Carrillo; one son, Jesus “Chuy” Subia and one grandson Fernando Subia. Survivors include his wife, Reyes Carrillo; three sons, Albert “Beto” Carrillo; Ismael Bustamante, Juan “Chicano” Bustamante; one step-son, Abraham Rodriguez; five daughters, Michelle Dominguez, Anita Acosta, Aurora “Cora” Rodriguez, Carol Rayos and Eloisa Nunez; two step-daughters, Isabel R. Hernandez and Teresa Rodriguez; one brother, Manuel Carrillo; one sister, Hilda Carrillo; 43 grandchildren; 88 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great grandchildren.
Jason PallanesJason Perea Pallanes, of Los Angeles, Calif., died Friday, Oct. 1. The family was receiving friends at 1600 S. Camp in Midland. Pallanes was a Navy Diver and part of the Explosives, Ordience, Disposal Command unit. Survivors include his wife, Esmeralda Pallanes of Los Angeles, Calif.; four sons, Christopher, Anthony, Nathaniel and Marcus Pallanes of Los Angeles, Calif.; one daughter, Brianna Pallanes of Los Angeles; his mother, Lucy Perea Pallanes of Midland; his father, Isabel Pallanes of Midland; two brothers, Roman and Nathan Pallanes of Midland; two sisters, Lisa Pallanes and Stephanie Herrera of Midland and the Perea family from Pecos. Alonzo VasquezAlonzo A. Vasquez, 69, of Pecos, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa. Mass was held at 2 p.m., Friday, Oct. 8, at Santa Rosa Catholic Church with Father Manny Munoz officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Evergreen Cemetery. He was born April 11, 1935, in Marfa, was a lifetime Pecos resident, a seismograph operator and a Catholic. Survivors include two sons, Francisco Javier Sanchez of Dennison, Alfonso Vasquez of Pecos; one daughter, Elena Vasquez of Pecos; one brother, Richard Vasquez of El Paso; four sisters, Gloria Rodriguez and Julie Lujan of El Paso, Maria Luisa Machuca of Marfa, Sally Williams of California and eight grandchildren. Peaceful Garden Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Loyce Elaine BrownLoyce Elaine Brown, 65, of Rochester, Minn., died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2004, at Seasons Hospice in Rochester, Minn. A memorial service was held at 11 a.m., Friday, Oct. 1, at Evangel United Methodist Church in Rochester with the Reverend Jeffrey Utecht officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery in Rochester. She was born June 13, 1939 in Pecos, was the daughter of Frank and Beulah (nee Fickling) Joplin. Raised in Pecos, she was a graduate of Pecos High School in 1957. She then went on to graduate with honors from Baylor University in 1961. She was married to Larry R. Brown, M.D. in 1962 and has lived in Rochester, Minnesota since 1974. Brown was one of the founders and charter members of the Rochester Alliance for the Mentally Ill. She received several awards, including the KTTC "10 Who Make A Difference" award for her educational presentations to community churches, civic organizations, and schools in Rochester for better understanding of mental illness. She was active as a Patient Advocate for the Women's Cancer Center at Mayo, participating in symposia, workshops, and patient counseling pertaining to issues concerning ovarian cancer. She was a leader in Women's Bible Study Fellowship for several years and was also active as a church member, teacher, and choir member at Evangel United Methodist Church in Rochester. Survivors include her husband, Larry R. Brown, M.D., of Rochester, Minnesota; sons: J. Bart Brown, Blake Brown and Dwight Brown all of Rochester; 2 grandchildren; brothers, Wayne Joplin, and Jerry Joplin, all residing in Texas; a sister, Barbara LeBarron, also from Texas; and a brother, Tom Joplin of Virginia. She was preceded in by her parents. If so desired, memorials may be directed to Evangel United Methodist Church, or NAMI of Olmsted County, 903 West Center Street, Rochester, Minnesota 55902.
