Loyce Elaine Brown

Loyce Elaine Brown, 65, of Rochester, Minn., died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2004, at Seasons Hospice in Rochester, Minn.

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m., Friday, Oct. 1, at Evangel United Methodist Church in Rochester with the Reverend Jeffrey Utecht officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery in Rochester.

She was born June 13, 1939 in Pecos, was the daughter of Frank and Beulah (nee Fickling) Joplin. Raised in Pecos, she was a graduate of Pecos High School in 1957. She then went on to graduate with honors from Baylor University in 1961. She was married to Larry R. Brown, M.D. in 1962 and has lived in Rochester, Minnesota since 1974.

Brown was one of the founders and charter members of the Rochester Alliance for the Mentally Ill. She received several awards, including the KTTC "10 Who Make A Difference" award for her educational presentations to community churches, civic organizations, and schools in Rochester for better understanding of mental illness. She was active as a Patient Advocate for the Women's Cancer Center at Mayo, participating in symposia, workshops, and patient counseling pertaining to issues concerning ovarian cancer.

She was a leader in Women's Bible Study Fellowship for several years and was also active as a church member, teacher, and choir member at Evangel United Methodist Church in Rochester.

Survivors include her husband, Larry R. Brown, M.D., of Rochester, Minnesota; sons: J. Bart Brown, Blake Brown and Dwight Brown all of Rochester; 2 grandchildren; brothers, Wayne Joplin, and Jerry Joplin, all residing in Texas; a sister, Barbara LeBarron, also from Texas; and a brother, Tom Joplin of Virginia. She was preceded in by her parents. If so desired, memorials may be directed to Evangel United Methodist Church, or NAMI of Olmsted County, 903 West Center Street, Rochester, Minnesota 55902. There will be no visitation or reviewal.

Louisa Contreras

Louisa Contreras, 89, of Barstow, died Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, at her residence. Mass was held at 10 a.m., Thursday, at Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church with Father Manuel Muniz officiating. Burial was in Barstow Cemetery.

She was born June 21, 1915, in Barstow, was a housewife, a lifelong Barstow resident and a Catholic.

Contreras was preceded in death by her son, Higinio Garcia, Sr. and great-grandson Ruben Lawrence Renteria.

Survivors include three sons, Abel and Arnulfo Bustillos of Barstow, Javier Ortiz of Barstow; three daughters, Lucia Bustillos, Herminia Garcia of Barstow, Gloria Avila of Barstow; 13 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mary Cunningham

Mary Cunningham, 79, of Pecos, died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at Reeves County Hospital.

A memorial service was held at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, at the Pecos Funeral Home with Pastor Craig DeArmond officiating. Burial was in Mt. Evergreen Cemetery.

She was born Sept. 30, 1925, in Snyder, was a housewife and a longtime Pecos resident. Cunningham was preceded in death by her sister and best friend, Ruth; her younger sister, Dorothy and brother, Mulley Molinare.

Survivors include her husband, William C. Cunningham; four sons, Ricky Cunningham of Odessa, Billy Brieten of Pecos, Richard Breiten of San Antonio, Terry Cunningham of Snyder; one daughter, Connie Farmer of Snyder; one sister, Johnnie Molinare of Snyder; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and many nephews and nieces. Pecos Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

David Dennis Davis

David Dennis Davis, 82, passed away Friday, September 24, 2004, in Centennial, Colorado.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 2, 2004, at Austin Memorial Park, Austin, Texas, with the Reverend David Fikes of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, officiating.

David was born November 29, 1921, to Helen Howard and James Rupert “Ruby” Davis, in Sonora, Texas. David was the grandson of J. L. Davis, former sheriff of Sonora and a Texas Ranger.

He was married to Anne Sutton of Austin on November 28, 1942, until her death on July 25, 1983. On June 26, 1993, David married Elizabeth Smith Lane of Austin.

David was a flight instructor in the Army Air Corp in WWII, graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Business, farmed and ranched in Pecos, Texas, then sold real estate in Austin and Georgetown. He was an active member of Rotary in Pecos and Austin.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth, of Georgetown, a brother, Leonard Davis of Ruidoso, New Mexico, a daughter, Jane Davis Phillips of Centennial, Colorado, and a son, David Sutton Davis of San Antonio, Texas, and 4 grandchildren.

David is preceded in death by his first wife, Anne, his sister, Helen Smith, and brothers, Howard Davis and Jack Davis.

Miguel Machuca

Miguel “Mike” Machuca, 48, of Pecos, died Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at Home Hospice House in Odessa.

Mass was held at 10 a.m., Monday, Sept. 27, at Santa Rosa Catholic Church with Father Gustavo Lopez officiating. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery.

He was born May 8, 1956, in Ruidosa, Tx., was a floor hand, had served in the U.S. Army, was a lifetime Pecos resident and a Catholic.

Machuca was preceded in death by his father, Salvador Machuca.

Survivors include his wife, Eva Z. Machuca of Pecos; his mother, Braulia Acosta Machuca of Pecos; two sons, Michael Machuca and Gilbert Villareal of Pecos; three daughters, Tracie and Patricia Machuca of Odessa, Lina Zapata of Morton; three brothers, Salvador and Andy Machuca of Pecos, Miguel Garcia of El Paso; one sister, Socorro Machuca of Pecos and three grandchildren.

Jim Wafer

Services are incomplete for Jim Wafer, who died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004, in Marble Falls.

Wafer was a longtime Pecos resident and the funeral will be held in Pecos.

Manuela Alarcon

Manuela D. Alarcon, 63, of Barstow, died Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at Reeves County Hospital.

Mass was held at 10 a.m., Friday, Sept. 15, at Santa Rosa Catholic Church with burial in Barstow Cemetery.

She was born May 28, 1941, in Grandfalls, was a housewife, a lifetime Pecos resident and a Catholic.

Survivors include David Wayne Ramirez and Edgar Alarcon of Odessa; two brothers, Benjamin Dominguez of Grandfalls, Fernando Dominguez of Midland; one sister, Maria Corrales and three grandchildren.

Angelita Martinez

Angelita Porras Martinez, 64, of Pecos, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004, at Reeves County Hospital.

Mass was held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 15, at Santa Rosa Catholic Church with burial in Greenwood Cemetery.

She was born Sept. 30, 1939, in Barrancos, Mexico, was a provider for Nurses Unlimited, a lifetime Pecos resident and a Catholic.

Survivors include three sons, Saul Porrsa Martinez, Teofilo Porras Martinez of Pecos, Fernando Porras Martinez of Monahans; one daughter, Anabel Martinez of Pecos; four brothers, Jose Porras of Artesia, N.M., Bernardo Porras of Presidio, Enrique Porras of Midland, Manuel Porras Mesa, Ariz.; one daughter, Juna Porras of Barrancos, Mexico; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Lucille Ross

Lucille “Lucy” B. Ross, 92, of Scottsdale, Ariz., died Sept. 11, 2004, with her loving family by her side.

Lucy was born on Dec. 20, 1911, in Balmorhea, and moved to Pecos when she married Harry Ross in 1929. She was a resident of Pecos until 1966, when she and Harry moved to Scottsdale, Ariz. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1974, her parents Jennie and Fred Stroade, her sister Marie Backus and her brother Frederick Stroade.

She is survived by her sisters Anna Mae Reynolds and Jane Dean, her brother Kenneth (Edith) Stroade, her daughter, Harriet (Billy Rex) Johnson, grandchildren Ross Johnson and Brenda (Robert) Benson, her great-grandson, Riley Benson and many nephews and nieces.

Lucy was a successful Pecos business owner, where she enjoyed meeting and helping many of Pecos’ citizens at both the Heritage House and The House of Gifts. After moving to Arizona, she took great pride in managing and buying for the Gift Shop at Phoenix’s Good Samaritan Hospital, where for over 10 years, until she retired at age 77, she led a team of volunteers whose profits supported many health related and charitable causes.

Lucy’s most important source of joy in life, besides her grandchildren, were her family and many friends, for whom she loved to cook and entertain. She enjoyed gardening and always had a yard full of flowers at her home in Pecos. She continued to lead a vital, energetic life until well into her late 80’s. Lucy loved to travel, and was able to visit Switzerland and Austria in 1991, and attended a large Ross family reunion in San Antonio at the age of 90.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, Sept. 17, 2004 at 10 a.m., at the Pecos Funeral Home, with a graveside service at the Evergreen Cemetery to immediately follow.

Lucy was greatly loved by her family and will always be remembered.

Malaya Griffin

Malaya Marie Rodriguez-Griffin, an infant, died Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2004.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Friday, Aug. 27, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church with Rev. Trinidad Fuentez officiating.

She was born Aug. 9, 2004, in Lubbock.

Griffin was preceded in death by her great-grandfather, Bob Griffin.

Survivors include her parents, Robert Fuentez Griffin and Victoria Ann Rodriguez; her maternal grandparents, Cindy Lopez of Midland; Ron and Kathy Dragoo of Dallas; paternal grandparents, Duane and Martha Griffin of Midland; paternal great-grandparents, Daniel and Joaquina Fuentez, Sr. of Pecos; Freida Griffin of Barstow; maternal great-grandmother, Linda Halstead of Midland; great-great grandparents, Felis and Maria Rodriguez of Barstow.

Ralph Ray Jr.

Ralph James “Jim” Ray Jr., 53, died Monday, Aug. 30, 2004.

A memorial service was held at 10 a. m., Friday, Sept. 3, at West Funeral Home Chapel with Roelf Ruffner of Southside Church of Christ officiating.

He was born Jan. 8, 1951, in Tulsa, Okla., was raised and educated in Pecos, graduating from Pecos High School in 1969, moved to Carlsbad in 1987 from Brownfield, was previously employed with Western Geophysical as head surveyor for 25 years. Currently, he was employed with BP Services as a truck driver in the oil fields.

Survivors include two sons, Ralph “Butch Ray of Carlsbad, Christopher Ray of Springfield, Mo.; three sisters, Sherry Pacheco of Walsenburg, Colo., Charlotte Mullins of Afton, Okla., Jean Allen of Dew, Tx.; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Martin Salazar

Martin C. Salazar, 44, of Odessa, died Monday, Sept. 6, 2004, at his residence. Services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Sept. 10, at Odessa Funeral Home with Rev. Joseph Uecker officiating. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery.

He was born Jan. 18, 1960, in El Paso, was a Christian Catholic, and a derrick hand in the oilfield industry.

Salazar was preceded in death by his parents, Raymundo and Juana Ramon C. Salazar and one sister, Juanita S. Ramirez.

Survivors include one daughter, Wendy Lee Salazar of Bakersfield, Calif.; four brothers, Raymundo S. Salazar Jr. of San Diego, Calif., Juan Ramon Salazar of Midland, Christopher Patrick Salazar of Dallas, Jesse Gene Salazar of Pecos; three sisters, Gloria S. Leyva, Martha Ann S. Leyva of Odessa, Anita Cobarubio of Oklahoma; several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Edna Withers

Edna Louise Poer Withers, 96 passed away Friday, September 3, 2004 at Monahans Managed Care Center. She was born March 7, 1908 in Toyah, Texas. Her parents were William Emmitt and Suzie Pearl McElvain Poer.

Edna Withers grew up in Pecos, and continued to live there for most of her life. She attended Sul Ross College and Mary Hardin Baylor. She loved children, and taught school in Toyah, Fort Stockton, Barstow and Pecos. She also ran a Kindergarten in her Pecos home for many years. Edna was also a musician and an artist. She was a founding member of the Pecos Art Club and a member of the Merry Wives Club. She was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Pecos, where she directed the 5 Year Old Sunday School Department for many years.

In addition to her parents, Edna was preceded in death by her husband, M. P. (Buddy) Withers, two brothers, Stanley Poer and Nathan Poer, and one sister, Ruby (Tiny) Walker.

She is survived by one brother, Truett Poer, of Monahans and by nine nieces and nephews.

Services were held at 4 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Pecos, with Reverend Greer Willis officiating. Burial follwed at Fairview Cemetery in Pecos. Services were under the direction of Family Funeral Services/Jackie Harkey of Monahans.
