From: "Melendez, Gilbert" gmelendez@mail.va.gov

First of all, I want to thank the Pecos GAB staff for setting up this fabulous website. It's a great way for keeping in tough or finding old (mature) school exes. So Thank you Again.

My name is Gilbert Melendez, graduated class of 1967. I left Pecos in 1967 for a four year military service tour in the USAF. I got stationed in Austin, Texas and have lived here since 1971. When I arrived at Austin, I thought I had died and went to heaven because I hadn't seen so many big green trees. I met my wife here and I have been married for 27 years. I have a 26 year daughter attending Medical School at Baylor Medical School of Medicine, and a 22 year son attending Southwest Texas in San Marcos, Tx. I graduated from St. Edwards University here in Austin and have been employed with the Office of Inspector General for 31 years, making plans to retire next year, god willing. I have missed the last two class reunions because either I was on a business trip or on a planned vacation. I do regret not attending these reunions, hoping maybe we get one going for the big one - 35 year class reunion!

So, if some of my buddies are still out there and remember who I am, please keep in tough. If others remember my brother Frank Melendez or my sisters Elia, Oralia, Sally, Yolanda or Lupe, and want to know there where abouts, let me know. My brother Frank after retiring from the military after 23 years is current working in San Antonio, Tx at the airport as a Custom Officer for INS, so Beware!.

My e-mail address is 'gmelendez@mail.va.gov' . Hope to hear from some of you. God Bless!

Subject: Howdy friends!
Date: Tue, 21 Sep 1999 20:28:22 -0500
From: "George Toone" gtoone@texas.net

This is your old buddy George Toone coming to you via the computer this time. Not by way of the radio, or in person, but by the computer. As technology advances, this is yet another way with which I can communicate with my friends now thanks to a voice synthesizer which reads the screen. Despite my visual impairment, I can read text messages and use the computer almost the same as does everyone else.

Lots has gone on in my life since I graduated Texas Tech in 1979. I went back to Pecos and worked for KIUN Radio in 1980 for about a year. About 6 months into that year I went to work for Raul Flores as a dispatcher for Reeves County.

I worked there and at the radio station off and on until the end of 1984 when I became a partner in a radio station in Lampasas. This endeavor did not go as I had hoped but I was able to recoup my money plus some after building the station from nothing up to a pretty good market share of listeners. I sold out and then came home to Pecos at the end of 1985 when I helped my friend who still resides there, Tom Nance in his trucking business.

Then, in December of 1985, I bought a radio station in Seminole Texas which I kept until August of 1989. I lost that station due to the previous owner not allowing me to keep it unless I financed it with a bank. Due to the oil field not being as it was in previous years, banks were not loaning money unless it was to a sure thing which the radio station was not.

I then came back to Pecos for about 6 months, and, in the meantime, I served as the manager for KERB in Kermit for a month and also helped with some of the family farming operation. Then, at my wits end, I went back to Texas Tech were I attained a Masters degree in Education with an emphasis in counseling.

I then went to work for the Texas Commission for the Blind in Dallas where I worked for 3 months. Then I received a promotion and moved to Lubbock to serve as a counselor for blind and visually impaired students at Texas Tech. This was a very political position and many people were envious because all of the employees in the state wanted this job.

I was then transferred to Abilene were I served as a field counselor for 5 years. The purpose of this position is to find and maintain employment for those who have visual disabilities. I did very well at this position and helped a lot of people to become independent and to remain or attain employment.

I was then offered a job in Austin in our headquarters in the administration unit and have been here for a little over 2 months. That is the past 20 years in a nutshell.

The big city life is quite different from the laid back life in Abilene and certainly different than the life I had in Pecos. I am having to learn much and do a great deal and lots of people are looking over my shoulder, something that didn't happen in Abilene. This change is a transition that is proving to be somewhat difficult but I will make it.

I would like to hear from my friends, if at all possible. Have lost track of a lot of people over the years but I have always been one who values my friends and I like to keep up with them. Each of you have a special place in my heart and I know many of you have pulled for me over the years and for this I extend my utmost gratitude.

I know that in these times of hustle and bustle it is hard to keep up but I still try to keep up with what is going on back at home. I know that some of you have left but you still keep up with this column and are aware of the goings on at home.

If you are one of my friends, write me an e-mail if you get a chance and catch me up on what is happening. My e-mail address is
gtoone@texas.net and my phone number is 512/453-4356. My mailing address is 2819 Foster Lane #F250 Austin, Texas, 78757. Should you ever be in Austin and have time, please give me a call. It would be nice to hear from you.

I wish you all the best in everything, wherever your roads and travels might have taken you. I am single and have very few obligations so not a great deal to tie me down other than work. Work is doing a good deal of that right now but it will level out.

The best to all and God bless each and every one who reads this. I appreciate your support. Happy trails to you and thanks to those involved for making this wonderful service available.

sincerely,
George Toone

From: rnwalker@swbell.net

What a great site! My daughter and I went through my high school annuals (1968-1972) recently and I've been walking down memory lane ever since.

My brother Steve graduated in 1971, married his school sweetheart, Nadine Key, and joined the Army. They saw the world, came home and traveled all over the US and now live in Dennison, Texas. Their e-mail address is snowlin@texoma.net.

I went to UT Austin, played too much (it was worth it!), dropped out and finally got my accounting degree in 1978. I got married, moved to Saudi Arabia, got divorced, moved to Houston, partied a lot, and had a daughter (now 12).

I'd love to hear from or about friends, classmates, and teachers from PHS. Does anyone know what happened to: William Kaddatz ('71)? Last time I talked to him he was married, living in Lubbock, and had dropped out of Tech.

Delight Woodward? I heard once that she was working at the hospital in Pecos, but that was years (and years) ago.

Randy Bell ('70)? I had such a crush on him!

DeeDee Davis and Matt Avery? Brenda Moon? Did we lose anyone in Vietnam?

This site did answer one of my age-old questions: Did Becky Hopper marry Mike Hooper? Yes to that one. I'm really looking forward to our 30th reunion. Email me at rnwalker@swbell.net if you've got any news.

From: "Dex D Welch" dexwelch@caprok.net

Hi everyone, Joe Merrell told me about this site & I'm glad to see everyone writing in.

Most of you probably remember me as the local "drunk", but things have changed very much in my life since those days. I accepted Christ as my Savior & Lord in 1982, surrendered to the ministry a few months later.

I was involved in a nursing home ministry for a year; reform school ministry for a year; spent two years teaching general Bible study for parolees & probationers in the courthouse basement in Ft. Stockton; six months in prison ministry in Ft. Stockton; one year as assoc. pastor of a small church here in Midland; and have also spent the last 17 years doing supply ministry for various churches, of various denominations.

I have 4 children-Todd,Troy,(twins)Shelby& Colby.

Would love to hear from any & all of you. May God bless you all. you can email me at:
dexwelch@caprok.net my web site is:
www.angelfire.com/tx2/TheWord

Due to my work schedule, it may take a few days for me to answer your email, so don't give up(it's tough being bi-vocational).

Those missing are: Daunel (Blackard) Longan, Harold Chestnut, Billie Ruth (Issacs) Harland, Annette Vessels, Wanda Jean (Hamilton) Rhinehart, James Gleason, Nora (Holcombe) Gray, Patsy (Walsh) Cryer, and Don Cox. In the meantime, I encourage all graduates to attend their reunions. They are great!

Hello Pecos Gab readers, my family moved to Alpine about 3-years ago and I became a Buck fan.

I was at the pep-rally on Friday for the Alpine Bucks and learned that the Bucks had not beaten the Eagles since 1973. I was anxious for the game to start and was looking forward to singing both School songs. Much to my dismay the Eagle band arrived too late for that, but I did sing at the end of the game. Congratulations to the Pecos Eagles on their victory. The Eagle band also looked impresive. For all the fans that did not make it to the game, you missed a good one!!!

In case you're wondering I am Celia Acosta-Evans class of '79.

I was very disappointed in our class since no attempt at having a ten-year class reunion was made; at least none that I know of. I think someone from our class should attempt to organize a 15-year reunion. I am now back in college (I am a freshmen, second semester) so that I can get my Bachelor's in Music Ed!

I now live in Midland, TX. If anyone would like to e-mail me, my address is beckyhd@yahoo.com. I hope to hear from someone soon!

Alan Tatum sent me the info about the website so thought I would send a quick note--saw some names I recognized. I also have e-mail addresses for Tim Edwards, Truman Turk, Cary Don Winterrowd, John Oden, and my sister Barbara (Johnson) Whisenhunt.

I live in Ft. Walton Beach, FL, am married to a retired air force pilot who is now an instructor pilot with the air force (civil service).

We have 2 sons, one married (he and his wife are expecting their first child in November), the other still in college.

I'm a REALTOR, have been for 14 years, and threw my hat in the political ring last summer by running for school board. The 2 jobs keep me on the move and involved in the community.

We spent the weekend with Susan (Boyd) Denton and her husband Craig in San Antonio a couple of weeks ago. Susan teaches gifted and talented in a high school. Kate Scott teaches at the same school and her daughter was one of Susan's students last year.

I will check the updates from time to time and look forward to hearing more news from Pecos friends.

How wonderful it is to read about old friends and what they are doing. Some of you may remember me-Carla Potter Nelson, Class of '75. I have been married for past twenty years to Mike Nelson (no, not the Mystery Science Theater guy) but, I am still known as Carla Potter and probably always will be.

We live in Odessa with our two boys, Doug (15yrs),a Sophomore @Permian High School and Scott(12yrs), a 7th grader @Nimitz Jr. High.

My mom, Jackie Potter, moved here about a year ago and is doing great. I recently changed jobs after 9 years working in local politics for the Ector County Judge's office. My new position is Assistant to the President of The University of Texas of the Permian Basin (UTPB).

When I graduated from here in 1980 with a BBA in Management, I never dreamed I'd be working for The President (of the University, of course). Suddenly, I have all this new found access to technology.

I keep in touch regularly with Brenda Moon, Jamie Burkholder (but, she moved to Houston recently), Jayme Lowrance, Janice Donaghey Parker, and constantly run into lots of people or siblings or cousins of friends we grew up with and went to school with. Brenda introduced me to PecosGab and I'd love to hear from Class of '75 or other friends.

Okay, Belinda Ortega and I have talked it over and decided that we're going to set up September 18 as the minireunion date. Those of you from the class of 1980 should hear from me by phone or email before September 1. If not and you're in the DFW area, email me with your phone number and I'll call you.

I graduated from Pecos High in 1968. My how time flies! I married a Dumas girl, Kriste, and we have been married 26 yrs. We have one married son, Brad, who works for USAA in San Antonio, and he has just made me a new "grandpa"! It is great!! Braxton Walker is his name. We have a daughter, Angie, that is a second year student at Wayland Baptist University. Angie has a 4.0 GPA and is my tennis partner.

Kriste is an elementary school teacher and I am director of operations for the Dumas ISD. I guess I will never get out of school. Things are going great here. I love to play golf and stay in shape! I have great memories of Pecos High and thank all those involved in helping me get an education. I hope things go well for you!

Toressa Baker Kilgore graduated in 1962 and I (Ronnie Kilgore) graduated in 1960. We live in Knoxville, Tn. and have been married for 33 years. We would like to hear from anyone who was in Pecos during the times we were there. Toressa's brother, Verb, finished in 1956 and my brother, Kent, was released from PHS in 1964. We have numerous fond memories of growing up in Pecos and my class should be having a reunion next year.

Hi, this is Jim Hill

I would have graduated with the class of 1966 if I hadn't moved to Fort Worth in the summer of 1963. I only attended my Freshman year in Pecos.

I live in Arlington now, for the past 25 years. I have been married for 26 years, have 2 kids and 6 grandkids. I played freshman football and played trombone in the PHS band - great trips to the State Fair in Dallas and a hot trip to Enid, OK.

Any plans for a 35th reunion in 2001? Keep me informed... Jim Hill via jaruhill@airmail.net

I was just stumbelling around tonite and found this site. It has been a terribly long time since I have even thought about Pecos. But this is a good way to look back.

I hadn't been reading the pages for a while, but our family recently had a small reunion last year and we suggested that we each bring photo albums of the old and the new. Wouldn't it be a great idea if the newspaper did something of that nature in a chronological manner of what the town looked liked way back when?. Maybe for the millienium ? Maybe we can request something like that and that way we can always have our memories and pictures too.

This is great! I've seen lots of familiar names that bring back a flood of memories.

If you saw the e-mail from the Moss family, I work for the same school district that Bill does although I'm just a lowly unit principal at the Darrington Unit south of Houston and he's an important central office type! Bill, I hope you read this!

My name is Lana McCormick Watson. Jim and I eloped in 1963 so we didn't gradute with our class in 1966....we went right on to the 'School of Life'. HA! Amazingly we will have our 36th anniversary in November. Guess we were a good match in spite of the fact that we were really too young to have known that at the time.

We live in Kermit Tx. Jim works for EOTT Pipeline and I work for the Winkler County Appraisal District. We have three daughters, Amy 31, Lori 29, and Jenni 24. They all live in Odessa with their families. We also have seven grandchildren. What fun!

Recently, I've had fun getting reacquainted with Betty Lee Crow Drake after I found out that she was teaching school in Wink. It's been fun thinking about the 'good ole days'. Betty Lee is the one who told me about this site. It's great to have access to so many people that I have wandered about.

Does anyone know where Kathy Bingham is? Also Becky Butts, Linda Jordan, Diane Epply, and Jana Fraley.

Gotta go. Let us hear from some of you. Lana McCormick Watson ...bonga@apex2000.net
