Peggy McCracken

Squarely Pegged

By Peggy McCracken

Eyes don’t see,
ears don’t hear

You can’t teach an old dog new tricks, and I know why. Their arteries are hardened, and they can’t remember anything. If you can’t remember, you can’t learn.

Smokey got the brilliant idea that I should lay out my book of columns and memoirs in InDesign, the program we use to lay out the paper. Problem is, I don’t know how to use InDesign, nor do I know how to operate the Mac computers it resides on.

Not that I have anything against Macs. I tried out the little MacIntosh when it was in diapers, and found its screen icons to be user friendly. But then Microsoft copied the concept in its Windows operating systems, and I didn’t have to switch.

Windows is much better for bookkeeping, so I have stayed with it. I did try to use the Mac version of Quickbooks to please Smokey, but it is lousy.

When I was a reporter and we were still using PCs, I learned the layout program PageMaker to put the monthly “Living off the Land” section together. It is similar to InDesign, so that has been some help.

Laying out one page at a time is different from constructing a book, though, and I haven’t learned the first step in bookmaking yet. Using the “Help” screens has never been my favorite method of learning, and it is even worse with this, because I can’t understand the Mac terminology.

Medical experts tell us that exercising the brain will help to keep it functioning. Maybe if you never stop teaching a dog tricks, he will never stop learning. As for me, I feel like this:

“…Their eyes don’t see and their ears don’t hear.” Romans 11:8b
