PARADE WINNER - Mexican Queen Maegan Rodriguez's float took first
place on Saturday, during the annual 16th of September parade. First prize
winners were announced in several of the parade divisions, and this year's
event had a good turnout of participants and onlookers under clear skies.

NEW PLAYGROUND IN PLACE - Pecos Head Start children play in
their new playground area, located in front of the former Zavala Elementary
School this morning. Other playground equipment has yet to be moved to Zavala
from the former Pecos Elementary, where the Head Start program was located
last year. The Head Start program has been housed in five different buildings
over the past decade, but officials are hoping the move to Zavala will be
the last for a while.

on Saturday at Martinez Field. Velarde and Midland Rockhounds mascot, Rocky,
presented the Matas with autographed gifts prior to the start of the two
day tournament. Johnny Mata was killed in March while fighting against Iraqi
troops as a member of the 507th Maintenance Company.

HOME SAFELY - Rebecca Natividad, of Pecos, poses for a picture
in one of the supply huts where she was stationed in Saudi Arabia, at Prince
Sultan's base. U.S. troops used the base to supply troops involved in the
war in Iraq. Natividad is back home from the Iraq war and has been busy
visiting with friends and relatives.

HOMECOMING PARADE - U.S. Army Pfc Jessica Lynch (left), with her
brother Greg Jr. (right) at her side and her boyfriend Sergeant Ruben Contreras
holding her hand, rides in the back of a convertible through the streets
of her hometown during her homecoming parade, 22 July 2003. Lynch, who was
captured and held prisoner in Iraq after the Humvee she was riding in took
a wrong turn, was released today from Walter Reed Army Medical Facility
in Washington, DC. Contreras, who along with Lynch was a member of the 507th
Maintenance Company, is a former Pecos resident. Her cousin said the two
planned to get married.

RECREATIONAL VBS - Jason Matthews, Ember Rogers, and Aron Kahler,
the recreation team from First Baptist Church of Midland, entertain a group
of children this morning at a recreational Vacation Bible School. The VBS
is being held at the East Side Community Center this week from 9 to 11:30
a.m. The team provides indoor and outdoor games, "silly songs," and bible
stories for the kids.

ON-TRACKS LONG ENOUGH - Bull rider Casey Decker gets tossed by
"Tracks" on Wednesday night at the West of the Pecos Rodeo, but not before
staying on the mandatory eight seconds and scoring 81 points, to take the
opening night lead in the bull riding competition. Bull riding was held in
a single section at the end of last night's rodeo, and will continue through
the final three nights of this year's show, today, Friday and Saturday,
beginning each night at 8 p.m. at the Buck Jackson Rodeo Arena.

CALF CAUGHT -- Roper Shawn Felton closes in on his calf during
the second go-round of roping competition for the West of the Pecos Rodeo
this morning at the Buck Jackson Rodeo Arena. Felton came in with a 10.4
second time on his effort. The first go-round of slack was completed during
a daylong session on Monday at the Buck Jackson Arena, and second-go round
competition will continue this evening at the arena, following a kids' rodeo
that will get underway at 6 p.m.

DIVING IN - Eight-year-old Marisa Elizondo dives in during this
morning's instruction at her swim lessons at the High School Natatorium
while instructor Rebecca Reynolds and classmate Harley Lozano look on. High
School Head Swimming Coach Terri Morse is in charge of the summer program.
"This has been one of our better summers so far," Morse said. "We have
good instructors and good kids who are really responding." Morse said that
the summer swimming program is divided into a pre-school section for 3-4
year olds, and then seven levels of varying difficulty. Marisa, whose parents
are Martha and Rick Elizondo, is in the Level 4 class. "We also have a
Guard Start class for kids who are eleven years old or older and have at
least completed level six. It is not offered every summer but we have a class
this year," Morse said. The Guard Start class is a beginning class for lifeguards.
Morse said that parents could still sign their kids up for the second summer
session that runs June 16-27. The sign up fee is $25. "I would encourage
parents to come in this week to make sure there is room in the class," she
said. The first session is full with 200 Pecos kids signed up. Parents can
see Morse at the High School Natatorium between 8:30 and 11:30 a.m.

Navarrete, Lara Gonzales, Bryce Salcido, Katelyn Aguilar and (back) Cielo
Ornelas show off some of the "goodies" for sale during the annual Golden
Girl/Little Miss Cantaloupe Bake Sale held at both banks early this morning.
This group of girls were busy at Security State Bank, while the other half
sold baked goods at West Texas National Bank.

NO FLOW BELOW ROAD -- What looks like the edge of a small pond
is actually what's left of the water in the Pecos River between the Business
I-20 and Union Pacific Railroad bridges east of Pecos. The water flow of
the river has dried up at high spots underneath both bridges. It's the second
year in a row the river has stopped flowing in the Pecos area, due to the
long term drought in the Trans-Pecos regions of both Texas and New Mexico.

SCHOLARSHIP CONGRATULATIONS -- Pecos High School Senior Erica Franco
receives a hug from Shonah Lozano, 2002 Golden Girl Chairwomen, for being
the 2002 Golden Girl Runner - Up during last night's Senior Scholarship
and Awards Ceremony. Franco also received an award from the Downtown Lions
Club for $1,000 and the Letha Prewit Basketball Memorial Award.

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT -- Denise Chabarria (right) accepts the Jaime
P. Rodriguez Courage Scholarship Award from Trans Pecos Drug Task Force
Commander Gary Richards during a reception and ceremony held Friday in the
Reeves County Courthouse. Chabarria was chosen for the special award for
her courage and strength she has shown while combating a form of leukemia
since she was 12.

BIRTHDAY GIRL -- Reeves County Hospital Human Resources
Director, Nadine Smith, takes a picture of a little girl who was born at
the hospital during the past 25 years of operation at its current location
on Texas Street. Pictures of all the people born at the hospital who attended
Thursday's celebration were taken and will be placed on a commemorative
birth certificate that will be sent out next week. The hospital had a community
wide birthday party to celebrate 25 years in the current facility.

as bridesmaids to coach Tina Hendrick, who married fellow coach Gaylon Doan

newly elected councilmen (left to right) Frank Sanchez, Gerald Tellez and
Danny Rodriguez during this morning's city council meeting. Sanchez and
Tellez were re-elected to the council this past Saturday, while Rodriguez
returned to the council after being defeated for re-election in 2002.

NOT QUITE CRICKET - Pecos Head Start student Maleke Abila and
Angelo Reyes try to get the hang of the game of cricket, as parental helpers
Frank Mendoza and Valerie Abila look on during this morning's El Dia de
los Ninos (Day of the Children) event at the Head Start building on South
Willow Street. The children participated in a variety of games, including
hitting balls with plastic bats, golf clubs and hockey sticks, bicycle riding,
bobbing for apples and fishing for oranges. Head Start teachers and parents
of the children at the school oversaw the event.

HOME FROM THE WAR -- United States Marine, Eddie Lujan, shakes
hands with Jack Hamilton during a gathering at the Pecos Senior Citizen
Center Thursday afternoon, after returning from the Persian Gulf late Wednesday
night. As a guest of the gathering, Lujan heard phrases like, 'Thank you
for being over there for us,' and 'Welcome home.' Lujan told those in attendance
that he along with other military servicemen and women were thankful for
the support they had received. He said that it meant a great deal to them
to have the support of the people. Lujan will be returning to the Marine
Corps' Miramar Airstation in San Diego on Sunday.

SHOCK AND AWE - Students from Mrs. Flemming's class at Pecos
Kindergarten are surprised as they see what happens to passengers in a vehicle
when a seat belt is not worn, during a vehicle rollover demonstration this
morning at the Texas Department of Transportation yard on the west side of
town. The children took a field trip to TxDOT and were also told how machines
worked to fix the roads and paint the lines on them.
LOCAL HERO -
Heather Scheier's third grade class at Austin Elementary
School stand in front of the bulletin board dedicated to the soldier they
"adopted" and have been communicating with. The class chose Rebecca Natividad,
a U.S. Air Force Airman from Pecos, and has been sending her care packages,
e-mails, letters and pictures. The group hopes to meet her when she comes
home.

CHARTS FLIGHT PATH Lt. Col. West Anderson, Commander of
the 7th Operations Support Squadron out of Dyess AFB, points to a chart
that illustrates the path of the specifically military training route
IR178 and the Lancer military operations area in West Texas.
Anderson along with other U.S. Air Force officials out of Langley and Dyess met
with city officials yesterday afternoon at Odessa College's Pecos
Technical Training Center.
STATE BOUND - Pecos High School students Kaci Harrison and
John Marvin Clark stand in front of the chutes at the Buck Jackson Rodeo
Arena with some of the prizes the two have earned through rodeo
competition. The two will be competing in state competition in June through the
Texas High School Rodeo Association.

RELEASED IN MEMORY OF HUSBAND - Nancili Li Mata releases a white
dove during the funeral services of her husband, U.S. Army Warrant Officer
Johnny V. Mata. The dove was released at Mt. Evergreen Cemetery, where Mata
was laid to rest after dying in the war in Iraq last month.

HEAD OVER HEELS - Alex Fuentez surprises his instructor by performing
a one handed cart-wheel during yesterday's Power Tumbling demo held at the
Pecos High School old gym. Fuentez along with other children ages 3 and
up were out at the gym to be placed in different tumbling classes according
to their abilities. The group will be holding one class a week in Pecos.

NOW OPEN - Richard Hayes of California, stands in front of the
Pecos Inn, the local motel he is currently managing and which will open
it's doors tomorrow. Fifteen rooms are currently ready and waiting to be
occupied by visitors, while Hayes continues to work on renovations at the
motel, which has been closed for over 10 years.

areas in West Texas through a grant they received and will be publishing
a school newspaper about the different places they have visited. Other visits
in Pecos include the Maxey Park Zoo and the West of the Pecos Museum.

a book-signing held at the West of the Pecos Museum, last Thursday.
Smith was in Pecos promoting his new book, "Under the Chinaberry Tree,"
and the book can still be purchased at the museum, complete with his
autograph.

SWIMMERS RECEIVE HONORS -- Pecos-Barstow-Toyah ISD board members
recognize the Pecos Eagle Swim Team during their regular meeting. The
swimmers received several awards including the banner for finishing fifth
at the Class 4A State Finals in the boys' division. Pecos also won the boys
and girls district and regional titles, and several PHS swimmers were
also recognized for their outstanding records.

DAIRY DEDICATION -- Reeves County Judge Jimmy Galindo delivers
the keynote address outside the carousel building prior to this morning's
ribbon-cutting ceremony. Galindo gave the address in place of Texas Agriculture
Commissioner Susan Combs, who was unable to make the meeting due to
cuts in the department's travel budget.

and all the trimmings during the inaugural Fat Tuesday Spaghetti Dinner
sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. The family event marked the beginning

PEACH ICICLES -- Freezing weather plus a lawn sprinkler teamed
up to insulate these early peach blossoms in ice, in an attempt to
protect them from freeze damage. Temperatures stayed below freezing Monday,
and dropped to 24 degrees overnight. Forecasts call for freezing rain
possibly moving in from the west coast tonight, while freezing rain
east and south of Pecos closed over 200 miles of Interstate 10 last night.

NEW MUSEUM DISPLAY -- Baker Curtis Veterans of Foreign War Post
Commander Dora Pineda (center) presented West of the Pecos Museum curator
Dorinda Millan (left) and assistant Debbie Thomas with insignias of paratroop
units from around the world Wednesday morning. The insignias will be placed
in the museum's third floor military room.
SPECIAL DEDICATION -- Adriana Vasquez, Michelle Carrera and Joy
Petty stand in front of the stained-glass window the three have been working
diligently on for the past few weeks. The students, with the help of art
teacher Walter Holland, installed and painted the stained glass window located
in the second floor of the Reeves County Courthouse. A dedication and reception
was held Wednesday afternoon.

TOURNAMENT BEGINS - Pecos Eagles tennis player Michael Orona
returns a shot during opening round play this morning in the Pecos Eagle
Tennis Tournament. Coach Mike Ortiz was hoping to get all the singles and
doubles matches in the six-team tournament in today, but said final round
matches could be played on Saturday.
VALENTINE'S DAY GIFT Jim Workman surprises his wife, Michelle
at work with a banquet of flowers early this morning at the Odessa
College Pecos Center. Other spouses received gifts at their place of business on
this Valentine's Day.
TOUR FOR NEW ACADAMEY CLASS Pecos Police Chief Clay McKinney gives the second Citizen's
Police Academy Class a tour through the Pecos Criminal Justice Center's offices on Thursday. The second class began
last night and is scheduled to end at the end of April.

HIDDEN HERO-- Hugh Box accepts the Ruiz Profile of
Courage/Hidden Hero Award from Cindy Duke during Thursday's Chamber Awards
Banquet. Box was honored as faithful volunteer who enjoys helping others.
OFFICER OF YEAR-- Reeves County Sheriff's Deputy Israel
Campos poses with his Law Enforcement Officer of the Year Award he received
at Thursday's Chamber banquet. Campos volunteers during the weekends
and on his days off for several projects in the community, along with his
law enforcement duties.

LEADING SCORER AGAIN -- Pecos' Isaiah Armendariz (5) goes up for a shot during a game earlier this season at Kermit. Armendariz scored 13
points on Friday at Monahans, 17 less than in his last game against the Loboes,
but that was still the high-point total for the Eagles on the night, as they
dropped a 70-48 decision to the Loboes.

Civic Center in preparation for the Annual Pecos Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet. The banquet is scheduled for
7 p.m. tonight at the Civic Center.

LAY-UP TRY _ Pecos Eagles' guard Genaro Mendoza (11) goes up for a
lay-up during the Eagles' Jan. 24 game at Fort Stockton. Easy baskets have
been hard to come by for the Eagles in recent games, and they'll try to improve
on their recent scoring problems tonight at home, when they face Kermit in a
7:30 p.m. start.

KINDERGARTEN'S 100th DAY
CELEBRATION -- Students at Pecos Kindergarten celebrate the
100th day of school with different events held throughout the day, including the release of balloons in the front area of the school.
The students also enjoyed cake and decorating the number 100, with 100 different objects.
Michael Juarez begins to come out of a tuck
position during one of his dives last Friday at the District 3-4A Championships at
the Pecos High School pool. Juarez set a new school record for points in
winning the 1-meter competition and will be seeking his second straight trip to
state today in the regional competition, despite missing workouts on
Wednesday due to illness.
Pecos' Danielle Garcia

the first quarter of Friday's game. Pecos took a 10-3 lead at the outset of
the game, but saw Fort Stockton score 21 of the next 22 points on the way to
a 60-49 victory.
Pecos' Isaiah Armendariz tries to go between
Fort Stockton's Hart Mowry and Angel Marquez (24) for a lay-up attempt
during the second quarter of Friday's game. Armendariz had 20 points, and
John Parent (35) added 14, but the rest of the Eagles only combined for 17
points in a 61-51 loss to the Panthers.
- Pecos' Will Oglesby heads toward the turn as a sign shows how many
500-freestyle he's completed, during Saturday's finals of the District 3-4A Swimming and Diving Championships at
the Pecos High School pool. Oglesby set a district record in the race, and was named the Outstanding Swimmer
on the boys' side.
- Pecos' Kelsey Holt completes her leg of the 400-yard freestyle as Susan Moore jumps
into the pool in the final race of the day. The 400 and 200 freestyle relay teams for the girls also set district marks,
and both the boys and girls teams easily defended their 3-4A titles.

STOCK SHOW SALE —
Auctioneer Mem Hall of Marfa (right) gestures to the crowd as he takes
bids during Saturday night's Reeves-Loving Junior Livestock Show auction,
held at the Reeves County Civic Center. The total amount of bids at this
year's show came in at just under $50,000, which was up from the amount
last year. The total number exhibitors at this year's show also increased
from a year ago.

_ Reeves-Loving Hog Show judge Josh Krohn of Lamesa talks with Junior Showmanship
contestants during Saturday's event. Because of the large number of entries
in the hog show this year, the showmanship competition was divided into
two divisions each, and then the winners were picked during a second round
of judging.

NEW BOOK -- Victor Sotelo-Mata
shows off his new book entitled, "Ojinaga En La Loma" that depicts
life in both Ojinaga and Presidio. The book is a genealogy, featuring
several families in that area and also has valuable information on
that city and the surrounding communities.

POT FOUND IN PICK-UP -- Nearly
1½ tons of marijuana were found in this pick-up after it was stopped
in Big Bend National Park last Friday. A Pecos man was arrested as
the result of the marijuana seizure and a second pick-up, containing
over 1½ tons of marijuana, was found in a nearby area.

NEW BABY -- Reeves County Hospital
Auxiliary members Doris Tillery and Frances Clinton (standing) welcome
the hospital's New Year's baby, Ethan Michael Vasquez. Adriana Vasquez
gave birth to Ethan on Saturday. The two received a basket full of
"goodies" from the auxiliary members.

at the Reeves County Courthouse, after being presented with a plaque
for his time spent as commissioner. Hill and two other newly elected county
officers were sworn in by Holcombe on New Year's Day while the other
county officials elected to four-year terms in November was sworn
in this morning by 143rd District Court Judge Bob Parks
on the second floor of the Reeves County Courthouse.
