Rodriguez deployed for duty

Air Force Senior Airman Jose B. Rodriguez has deployed on a
temporary duty assignment as part of Joint Task
Force-Southwest Asia (JTF-SWA) headquartered in Riyadh,
Saudi Arabia.

The joint task force coordinates Operation Southern Watch
which plans joint military operations for coalition forces
comprised of U.S. Air Force, Army, Navy, and Marine Corps
servicemembers, along with British and French forces.

Operation Southern Watch conducts numerous coalition flying
missions to ensure compliance with the United Nations
Security Council resolutions which prohibit Iraqi military
flights and ground troop movements in the southern half of
Iraq.

Rodriguez is a vehicle operator dispatch assigned to the
4409th Logistics Squadron in Riyadh.

He is a 1991 graduate of Balmorhea High School.

Matta participates in Naval exercise

Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Ernest A. Matta, son of Ernest
H. and Alice Y. Matta, of Pecos, recently participated in
Exercise Bright Star '97 while on a six-month deployment to
the Mediterranean Sea aboard the aircraft carrier USS George
Washington.

Matta is one more than 5,000 Sailors and Marines aboard the
carrier who participated in the multinational exercise which
entailed naval, tactical air, amphibious assault, undersea,
special forces and ground combat training. U.S. troops from
all branches of the military participated in the exercise
along with forces from Egypt, France, Italy, Kuwait, the
United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom. Exercise Bright
Star was designed to improve unit readiness and
interoperability with coalition forces.

Aircraft carriers, like USS George Washington are forward
deployed around the world to maintain a U.S. presence and
provide rapid response in times of crisis. They serve as a
highly visible deterrent to would-be aggressors and, if
deterrence fails, offer the most versatile and powerful
weapons available. With Tomahawk cruise missiles, tactical
aircraft and combat-ready Marines, the forces provide
unified commanders with a range of flexible options and
capabilities.

The 1987 graduate of Pecos High Scool joined the Navy in
January of 1988.
