Diana Rayos is the 17-year-old daughter of Marcos and Maria Rayos.

She credits her family and friends for helping her in her quest for

Queen of 16th of September.

"The day of the fiestas we celebrate the Independence of Mexico," said
Miss Rayos. "I like going to Mexico since my favorite aunt lives there,"
she said.

Diana states that she feels nervous and excited both about running for
queen, since she is not used to speaking in public.

"This will be my first time doing something in the public," she said.

She has three sisters, Karina, Michele and Naomi and a niece and nephew
that she enjoys spending time with.

"I like being with my family, my friends, and going to dances," said
Miss Rayos. "I love to babysit my nieces and nephews and spend lots of time with them," she said.

Diaz celebrates second birthday

Fabian Diaz celebrated his second birthday with a party held in his
honor at his home in Balmorhea.

Two pinatas, a Lion King and a colorful horse were a part of the
celebration. Cake, punch and other refreshments were served to the guest.

His favorite gifts were a stuffed Dalmation and binoculars given to him
by friends and relatives.

He is the son of Dora Valerio and Salome Diaz of Balmorhea.

Maternal grandparents are Sostenes and Nacha Valerio of Balmorhea.Paternal grandparents are Socorro and Victor Diaz of Mexico.

Herrera completes year in
medical internship program

Navy Lt. Mark E. Herrera, whose wife, Anna, is the daughter of Pete and
Maria Reyes of Pecos, recently gradauted from his first of three-year
family practice internship program while serving at Naval Hospital
Pensacola, Fla.

Herrera will now begin flight surgery training at naval Operation
Medical Institute, Fla.

The 1988 graduate of Midland High School of Midland joined the Navy in
June 1992. Herrera is a 1992 graduate of Texas A&M University, College
Station, with a BS degree and a 1996 graduate of the Uniformed Services
University, Betheseda, Md., with a MD degree.
