Lady Monahans Basketball going strong

After a shaky pre-district the Ladies basketball team was happy to see
the opening of district play.

The girls have seen injuries to key players, team mates move away during
the Christmas break and found themselves playing one of the toughest
non-district schedules in the area.

The Lady Green went into district with a 6-12 record. Including losing
three heartbreakers by only one point.

The Green opened district play against Alpine last Thursday (Jan. 2).
The Lady Green unloaded on Alpine to bounce the Bucks 52-35 and record
their first district win.

All nine players on the Lobo rooster put some points on the board, but
it was Jenny Dutton who led the pack, racking up 12 points. Second in
scoring was Eunice Tarango who recorded 11 points.

The Green took the momentum on to the next game against the Mountain
View "Lobos" Saturday. Monahans made it a long trip for Mountain View
sending them home with their tail between there legs with a 70-63 rolled
up newspaper. The win has the Ladies tied for first with Clint in
district 3-3A at 2-0 over all.

The 70 points represent the Ladies highest points production of the
season.

Tonya Hix topped the charts with 19 points followed by Mandy Treadaway,
Sarah Carrell and Tracie Jasso who all ended the game with 11 points.

"I'm as proud as I can be of these kids," said Head Coach Mike Swigert,
"all that they have been through and they just keep stepping up.

"Tonya Hix has not only been a defensive demon but was also a scoring
machine against Mountain View.

"Tracie Jasso has been a great addition since being called up to the
varsity just last week, but I think the best surprise has been the play
of Mandy Treadaway."

The senior guard has assumed the starting point guard duties after it
was learned that classmate Dorian Sloan would not be returned from knee
surgery.

"I handed her a ball in our locker room and told her you're it, we're
going to sink or swim with you at the point" said Swigert.

"I think the key has been that we are all working together and if we
stay the way we are I think we have a chance to not only make the
playoffs but go far," said Treadaway.

The Ladies game Tuesday was called due to the weather, but the Green
will be in action Friday against Fabens in Fabens.
