September 2002Warren BurnettWarren Burnett, 75, died of a heart attack Monday, Sept. 23. 2002, in Fort Davis. A memorial celebration of Warren Burnett's life is set for 10:00AM Sunday, October 13, at the Arts Alliance Center at Clear Lake. It is for friend and foe alike. He was born on May 4, 1927, in Austinville, Virginia, was the star pitcher of the high school baseball team and was voted "most likely to succeed." Burnett attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute, now known as Virginia Tech, but dropped out to join the Marines. He served in the China-Burma theater near the end of World War II. Beginning in 1951, Burnett distinguished himself as a 23-year-old district attorney for Odessa and Midland in the 70th Judicial District. After two terms he opened his own practice as a trial lawyer. He tried jury cases all over Texas and New Mexico and in other states, flying his own plane from trial to trial. His law practice out of Odessa spanned 40 years. Burnett is survived by his wife, Kay Taylor Burnett; two daughters Melissa Burnett of Midland, Emily Burnett of San Antonio; stepdaughter Stacie Pauls of League City; two sons Abner Burnett of Mexico, Paul Burnett of Houston; two stepsons Britt Pauls of Galveston, Taylor Pauls of League City and two grandchildren. Pecos Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Roy Edward ParkerRoy Edward Parker, age 63, of Ballinger passed away Sunday morning, September 8, 2002, at his home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 10, at the First United Methodist Church in Ballinger with the Rev. Grosse Mohler, and the Rev. Bert Bronaugh of San Angelo officiating. Burial will follow in the Old Runnels Cemetery. Parker was born December 15, 1938, on the Webster Ranch at Fort McKavett, Texas, to Jesse H. and Myrtle Parker. He graduated from Menard High School in 1957 where he was an outstanding athlete. He attended San Angelo College where he began his career in radio broadcasting. He later worked in Ballinger KRUN for 14 years where he was known as Rockin' Roy. He was the voice for Bearcat Football for many years. Parker was also co-owner of Lugo's Gulf in Ballinger for several years. He also became the owner of several radio stations in Texas and Oklahoma. He owned KIUN/KPTX in Pecos, Texas. Parker was an avid fisherman and gardener and loved going to the Southwest Health Spa and visiting with his friends. Parker and his wife, the former Pat Hale were married in Glen Cove, Texas on July 30, 1960 and they were together for 42 years. His father, Jesse H. Parker; his stepfather, Barney Wright; his grandparents, J.F. and Faye Parker; and sister Joyce Pritchard preceded Parker in death. Survivors are his wife, Pat; his mother, Myrtle Wright of Menard; two sisters, Hyla McNutt of Lewisville and Melvena Gerhart and her husband Marvin of Crews; one brother Jack Wright of Ballinger; and numerous nieces and nephews. Parker also was known as Papa Bear to Eric Lugo, Diane and Tyler Carter. Janie Olivia CrouchJanie Olivia Crouch, 88, died on Aug. 21, 2002 at the Capitol City Nursing and Rehab Center in Austin. A service in remembrance of Crouch's life was held on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002 at 5 p.m. with Bert Crowson, Jack Wright and Walter Burch officiating. Crouch was was a longtime member of the University Avenue Church of Christ until she was disabled by Alzheimer's disease in 1995. She was a student and loyal supporter of the Institute for Christian Studies (now Austin Graduate School of Theology). Crouch was born in Florence, Ala., and educated at Texas Women's University in Denton; the University of Texas, and the Institute of Christian Studies, earning a B.A., M.A., and a Ph.D. degrees. Crouch taught at junior colleges in Stephenville, Texarkana and Corpus Christi. She authored two books God or Mammon, and All Things New: A Glimpse Into the Eternal. Survivors include one sister Ruth Burch of Simi Valley, California; two brothers Bob Crouch of Pecos, and John P. Crouch of Dallas; and 15 nieces and nephews. Dominga Villalobos YbarraDominga Ybarra died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002 in a local hospital. Ybarra was born Feb. 27, 1921 in Pecos, Texas to Sotero and Petra Barraza Villalobos. She was married to Simon Ybarra in 1935 in Pecos. Ybarra was a member of the Santa Rosa Catholic Church in Pecos and the St. Ann's Catholic Church in Midland. Ybarra was preceded in death by her husband, one son and two great-grandsons. She is survived by six sons, Pete Ybarra, Chris Ybarra, and Luis Ybarra all of Midland; Robert Ybarra and Ignacio "Nacho" Ybarra both of Pecos and Joe Ybarra of Florida; one daughter, Mary Y. Rios was a born in Marfa in Feb. 5, 1935, served in the National Guard and was a catholic. He was also a retired oilfield operator who lived in Monahans for 40 years. John MakovinyJohn Makoviny Jr., 83, of Midland, died Saturday, Aug. 31, 2002, at his residence in Midland. Funeral services in Midland will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 5, at First Baptist Church with Rev. Bob Hopkins officiating. Services in Pecos have been scheduled for 3 p.m., Thursday, at St. Catherine's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Stratford, Connecticut. Makoviny served in the United States Navy during World War II as a seaman second class on the U.S.S. Solace and received the Purple Heart for injuries sustained during the war. He attended New Mexico Highlands University and received a Master's degree in education. He then taught special education in Carlsbad, N.M., until his retirement. He attended St. Catherine's Church in Pecos, while living here and was an active member of the Knights of Columbus. Survivors include four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
