Balmorhea boys earn consolation at Imperial

Return to Menu

PECOS, Dec. 17 -- The Balmorhea Bears boys recovered from losing their
first basketball game of the season and their starting point guard on
Thursday at the Longhorn Classic in Imperial to claim the tournament's
consolation title, while Balmorhea's girls went 1-2 over the weekend in
tournament play.

The girls, who lost to Marfa in their tournament opener, were beaten by
the Jal Panthers on Friday, before coming back to down Odessa High's JV
Saturday, evening their record at 3-3 on the year.

The boys raised their season mark to 5-1 with their weekend wins. They
downed Grandfalls, 62-55, then took Dell City to win consolation, 46-40.
"We're still a little rusty from football,' boys coach Michael Barrandey
said. "We're playing O.K., but we're still making mistakes."

"We probably played better in the game we lost," he added. Balmorhea was
ahead of Marfa in the third period, when guard Debiasie Mendoza went
down with a knee injury. Barrandey said the junior was scheduled to go
to the doctor for tests on Wednesday.

"That might have made the difference," in the Marfa game, the Bears'
coach said. "We've got five guys starting who've got some experience,
but after that the experience level drops, so I'm just going to have to
see who can fill in."

Kevin Castillo had 21 points, Arturo Miranda 14 and Zane Rhyne 13 in
Friday's win over the Cowboys, while Miranda and Castillo both had 13 in
victory over Dell City.

The Bears have one more tournament before the Christmas break, this
weekend in Van Horn. Barrandey said the boys will face Juarez Academy
while the girls will take on Presidio in the first round of the
tournament.
