Eagles hope to keep Mustangs stalled

Return to Menu

By JON FULBRIGHT

Staff Writer

PECOS, Oct. 17 -- Based on how the Andrews Mustangs' defense has played
against the pass this season, it's going to be real important for the
Pecos Eagles to establish a running game Friday night, when the teams
meet at Eagle Stadium.

And based on the way Shaud Williams has played this season, it's also
going to be critical that the Eagles tighten up a lot at the line in
their District 4-4A home opener, a 7:30 p.m. start.

The Eagles and Mustangs both come into the game off shutout losses in
their district road openers a week ago. But Pecos will be trying to
recover from a 50-0 pounding at the hands of Big Spring, while Andrews
comes off a 14-0 loss at Sweetwater, in which they actually outgained
the host Mustangs in total yards.

"They looked good against Sweetwater, even though they didn't win,"
Eagles' head coach Mike Belew said. "We're definitely going to have to
do a great job on offense to keep the ball away from them."

If the Mustangs had Pecos' scoring percentage inside the 20 yard line,
they'd be in great shape, while the Eagles would like to be able to move
the ball outside the 20 the way Andrews has this season.

"We had some problems last week when we got into the red zone (inside
the 20). We're not executing down there," said Mustangs' coach Mike
Lebby. Andrews failed three times inside the 20 last week, and have
missed several other in-close chances so far, in getting off to a 2-4
start.

Pecos, in contrast, has been inside the red zone 13 times this season
and has converted 11 of those into touchdowns. But they haven't gotten
inside the 25 in their last six quarters, including all of last week's
loss, which left the Eagles with a 3-3 mark.

"We need to have a good game, especially after last week," Belew said.
"We need to move the ball better, and we need to play well all around
against a team like Andrews, because they're a good football team, and
to beat them, we'll have to play up to our full potential."

If nothing else, the Eagles will have a good idea who their defense
will have to stop. Williams has accounted for 987 of Andrews' 1485 yards
in total offense, 931 of that on the ground. He made his debut as a
freshman in last year's 42-0 victory over the Eagles at the Mustang Bowl
and ran for 61 yards, including a 3-yard first period TD run to open the
scoring.

"They have a tremendous back in Shaud Williams. Everybody's familiar
with him by now," Belew said, "And they also have a kid named (Danny)
Wheeler, who's an excellent blocker. He's one of the best blocking backs
I've seen in a while."
Wheeler served as Williams' blocker last season as well, and was given
a chance to carry the ball late in the win over Pecos, scoring on a
60-yard run.

Lebby said Andrews' blocking, especially from its offensive line, "is
much more effective today than we were in the first game of the season.
We've got three (starting linemen) back, and it usually takes a little
bit longer on offense when you have new faces."

"When you have a running back like (Williams), you try to get him the
ball as much as you can," Belew said, while adding, "They'll try and
fool you with play-action. They'll lull you to sleep with the run and
when you focus on that, they can play-action pass on you."

Andrews' sophomore quarterback Daniel Kessler hooked up with Brandon
Long for a 15-yard touchdown pass to give Andrews a last-second win over
Levelland, though overall, the Mustangs have thrown for just 211 yards.

"The protection has been pretty good. It's just been a combination of
some dropped passes and some poor passes," Lebby said.

While Andrews isn't getting much through the air, they aren't allowing
any, either. "Our defensive secondary has played really good," Lebby
said of the unit, which has allowed just 199 yards through the air and
one touchdown, while intercepting nine passes. All three numbers are
tops in the district.

That comes despite having to replace 10 of 11 starters off last
season's playoff-qualifying squad. "We've got a young squad, but except
for the Estacado game and the second half of the Midland (High) game,
I'm real pleased with our defensive effort," the Mustangs' coach added.

"Midland High beat them 30-6, but after watching the tape, I was
shocked Midland won. Andrews moved it up and down the field on them, and
Midland just got a few big breaks," Belew said.

Defensively, the Eagles' coach added, "They rush the passer well, which
helps their secondary, and they've got good speed and quickness among
their front four and defensive ends." Williams also starts at free
safety on defense and has two interceptions, while Cody Chesshire lead
all 4-4A players with three.

Where Andrews' young defense has been hurt is the same place they've
hurt others - on the ground. The Mustangs have allowed 1283 yards, worst
among the six 4-4A teams, though outside of the Estacado and Midland
High games, the defense hasn't allowed many rushing touchdowns.

Pecos was outgained on the ground last week 300 yards to 54, and got
running back Richard Gutierrez and quarterback Jason Abila banged up in
the process.
"Jason's still a little sore, but he's working out and we're monitoring
him on a daily basis," Belew said. "Richard's back is still a little
sore, and we're holding him out of contact practice,"

Friday's game is the only home break for Pecos in a five week stretch.
They come off trips to Kermit nad Big Spring, and face back-to-back
210-mile trips to Sweetwater and San Angelo the next two weeks.

Cougars seek to end Bears' home streak

Return to Menu

PECOS, Oct. 17 -- It's been over three years since the Balmorhea Bears
have lost a home game, and that's a record they'll need to maintain
Friday night against the last team to beat them in Balmorhea, the Dell
City Cougars.

Balmorhea hosts Dell City in a 7:30 p.m. start, with both teams looking
to take a major step towards locking up the second bi-district playoff
berth in District 8-A six man with a victory. The Cougars are 1-1 in 8-A
six man play, but have already beaten Sanderson, one of the two teams
tied with the Bears for second in the standings, and have also finished
up with first place Grandfalls.

They fell at home to the Cowboys in the closing seconds last week,
49-46, for their first loss in five games, after Grandfalls won at home
two weeks ago over Balmorhea, 39-26, handing the Bears their first loss
after four wins.
"This game in pretty much do-or-die for both teams," said Bears' coach
Michael Barrandey. Balmorhea closes out their season with a game next
week in Sanderson, and a Nov. 8 matchup at home against defending
district champ Buena Vista, which is also 2-1 in district play.

While the Bears are seeking their third straight trip to the playoffs,
Dell City is going for their third trip in the past four seasons. They
were runners-up in district two years ago to Balmorhea, and reached the
state finals the season before that, going undefeated in 8-A six man
play. That included a 58-39 victory on Oct. 8, 1993 in Balmorhea, the
Bears' last home field defeat.

Balmorhea won a 1-0 preseason scrimmage at home over Dell City back on
Aug. 23, but Barrandey said, "They're a completely different team. They
held back a lot that game, but the ran a lot of spread (offense) and
they've got a real good passing game, with a good quarterback and good
receivers."

Abel Valles had a pair of touchdown passes in last week's loss to
Grandfalls, as the Cougars threw for 335 yards on 29-for-45 passing.
Dell City also ran for 282 yards, with Javier Parra scoring on runs of
3-, 1- and 8-yards. The last gave Dell City a 46-43 lead with just 1:23
to play, but Grandfalls came back and scored on a Roy Vasquez pass to
Corey Moore with 35 seconds remaining.

"They've played a lot of high scoring games this year, so we'll just
have to see what happens, " Barrandey said. "We're concentrating on
stopping their passing game, and doing a few minor changes on offense to
adjust to their defense."

The Bears come off a 46-0 blanking of Sierra Blanca, which gave them a
5-1 season record, and Barrandey said going into Friday's game his team
"is probably the healthiest we've been in a while, and we've had a
couple of good practices this week."

Friday's winner figures to remain in a tie for second with Sanderson,
which faces Marathon, 0-2 in district, on Friday. Grandfalls also
figures to win, as they host 0-3 Sierra Blanca.

Sub-varsity gridders take on Andrews

Return to Menu

PECOS, Oct. 17 -- The Pecos Eagles' junior varsity team will try to
maintain their perfect record on the road tonight, while Pecos' freshman
will look to stay unbeaten at home, when they take on the Andrews
Mustangs in 7 p.m. starts.

Meanwhile, Pecos' seventh and eighth grade purple teams will see their
first action in two weeks, while the gold teams play for the third week
in a row, when Crockett hosts Andrews while Zavala goes on the road for
4 and 5:30 p.m. contests.

The JV and freshmen figure to be at a numbers disadvantage tonight
against Andrews due to grades - the Eagles lost 26 sub-varsity players
for at least three games, while Andrews' varsity coach Mike Lebby said
his squads had only one failure among his 9th graders and JVers.

This will be the ninth graders' first game with their depleted squad.
They're 4-1 but saw their game against Wink last Thursday canceled. The
JV did play minus 13 players last week, and improved to 6-0 with a 28-7
victory at home over Hobbs.

Pecos' eighth grade ~purple team will try to even their record at 2-2
with a home field win. They were idle last week after a loss in Kermit,
while the gold team remained at .500 (1-1-1) with a scoreless tie at
home against Fort Stockton last Thursday.

Zavala's gold team got their first win in three tries last week, 20-0 in
Fort Stockton, while their purple team split their first two games,
beating Monahans and falling to Kermit.
