PECOS, June 25, 1996 - The Pecos Junior League All-Stars will have a
team for the 1996 District 4 Tournament - but how long they play will
depend not only on how many games they win, but how much money they can
raise over the next week.
The participation of the team in the District 4 baseball tournament was
in doubt due to a lack of funds available to the Pecos Senior League,
which splits into two All-Star squads for tournament play. League
president Jesse Rayos said last week that while there was enough money
available to field a Senior League team of 14- and 15-year-olds, the
Junior League squad of 13-year-olds might not be able to play this
season.
However, Rayos said Monday night that enough money had been found to at
least allow the squad to begin play on July 3, though the schedule drawn
up by league officials in San Angelo means more money will be needed to
keep the Junior Leaguers going.
"We need money for three out-of-town trips," said Alma Garcia, one of
the parents of a team member who are trying to raise the needed funds.
"At $300 per trip, we need to raise about $1,000 right off the bat."
The Junior League team did draw a first round bye, but could face as
much as 1,400 miles in travel over an eight-day period to their
tournament games.
They will go to either Ballinger or Tri County (Miles) on July 3 for
their opener. If they win, that would be followed by either a trip to
Winters, Sonora or San Angelo on July 9, while a loss would leave the
team facing a trip to either San Angelo or North Concho (Water Valley)
on July 7.
Even with two straight wins to open the tournament, the team would still
face another trip of no less than the 140 miles - to Big Lake - or as
much as 210 miles - to San Angelo - on July 11.
Three straight wins would finally earn the team a home game, on July 13.
Most of the players on the squad were members of last year's Little
League All-Star team, which won the District 4 Tournament title.
Garcia said the Junior League plans to have a fundraising booth at
Fiesta Night in Old Pecos on Saturday, and will be soliciting funds at
Seventh and Eddy streets on Friday. Parents also plan to sell hamburgers
to raise funds on Sunday at the Wal-Mart parking lot.
Names of the Junior League All-Stars weren't released until Monday,
after it was determined the team would be able to play. Players chosen
include Angel Villalobos, Benny Juarez, Gilbert Fierro, Rosalia Carmona,
Alex Garcia, Jr., Ernie Baca, Michael Herrera, Chris Bryant, Pifi
Montoya, Omar Luna, Toribio Rodriguez, Jacob Barrera, Matthew Lara and
Carlos Rodriguez. Alex Garcia, Sr., is the manager of the team, with
James Herrera and Danny Reyes serving as coaches.
Pecos' Senior League All-Stars will open their 1996 tournament either in
San Angelo or at Miles on July 7, while Pecos' Little League All-Stars
get to play at home in their tournament opener on July 5, versus either
Ballinger or Big Lake.

Rodeo set for record bull-riding field

PECOS, June 25, 1996 - An extra bull-riding performance will be held
next Tuesday night, prior to the official start of the 114th anniversary
West of the Pecos Rodeo.

The pre-rodeo event will be the night before performances are set to
begin. This year's West of the Pecos Rodeo has been set for July 3-6 at
the Buck Jackson Rodeo Arena, beginning at 8:30 nightly.

The bull-riding event is maxed out this year, with more bullriders than
ever before, according to Rodeo President Jim Bob McNeil.

One-hundred fifty bull riders will be performing at the nightly events.

The purse is up this year from other years, and is the largest ever,
according to McNeil.

More than 688 contestants have entered roping, wrestling, riding and
barrel racing events sanctioned by the Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association.

The number is up by about 96 from last year.

McNeil also said last year's "boot scramble," an addition to the rodeo
which was geared toward children, will be repeated again next week.

"The children had some much fun last year we decided to do it again this
year," said McNeil.

The boot scramble is open to children ages 4-12, who will take off one
boot upon entering the rodeo. All boots will be placed in two separate
piles.

During the course of the rodeo, the children will be asked to go look
for their pair, and the first child to find his or her boot will be
declared the winner.

"There will be two divisions in this event," said McNeil. The first will
be for children ages 4-8 and the second for children ages 9-12.

The winner in each division will be awarded a $25 Savings Bond. Two
savings bonds will be given out each night.

"The first child to find their boot and reach the judge will be declared
the winner," said McNeil.

The boot scramble will be held each night of the rodeo performances.

Tickets are on sale at the Pecos Chamber of Commerce office,
915-445-2406 or 800-588-BULL.

A special addition was added to last year's West of the Pecos Rodeo
geared toward children which proved to be a success.

"The children had some much fun last year we decided to do it again this
year," said Rodeo President Jim Bob McNeil.
